Hi Folks,

Recently found myself at a point where these British Winters are no longer bearable so I am looking for a move to Spain and to be 100% have no idea on how to go about it or where to even start.

Not got around yet to reading all the articles on the Forum and to be honest was looking for a more direct and personal advice stream from someone who has basically done the same.

This is not a retirement plan (I'm only 56) and would look to keep active in work either from home or casual manual work in Spain.

I have no immediate ties and am ready to relocate also immediately but need advice on the following:

Purchasing/Renting a Property

Opening a Bank Account

Buying a Car/Transport

Picking up some casual work (Electrical Background but can and will turn my hand to anything)

Medications/prescriptions/healthcare

Areas to be looking at possible settlement locations

Residency in Spain

Moving options for personal belongings from UK

Main expenditure costs in Spain (apart from the usual mortgage/rent)

I' m sure there must be 1000s of posts like this and 1000s of people who do this every year so I would be extremely grateful for any response no matter how trivial the reply may seem, I really need some pointers here.

Thanks in Advance to you all.

Billy

If you do not hold a EU Passport it is not as simple to move to the EU since Brexit. Freedom of Movement within the EU no longer exists for UK passport holders.

I strongly advise you to read the information, advice and guidance contained in the following Web links:

Hello Billy,

Since Brexit anyone who is a British citizen has to apply for a visa to move permanently to Spain. You can apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate in London or Manchester. You will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements and supply other documents as required. Documents will need to be translated into Spanish.

Jobs are scarce in Spain and any available work must firstly be offered to an EU citizen. If you can find a job who no-one else can do then the employer will need to sponsor you with a work visa.

You could apply for a non lucrative visa but you will not be allowed to work. Work visas must be sponsored by an employer.

You cannot just come over to Spain nowadays and find work as you will be classed as illegal.

To gain legal residency you firstly need to apply for a visa.

I have an EU (Red Passport if this is what you mean) and a few years left on it tbf.

I will plough through the links you sent.

I may apply on compassionate grounds as these Winters are unbearable😂😂

Many Thanks

Billy

If you mean a UK issued passport, it makes no difference if it is red or blue, you are still a UK subject not an EU citizen.

Thanks Steve,

Any pointers on the remaining items on the list.

I can see a route via the visa application for me to get there I just need the right contacts regard property and options on that (plus all the other queries)

Cheers

Hi Bill,

If you think you can gain a non lucrative visa then you will not be allowed to work in Spain.

The financial requirements for a visa is an annual income of around €28,000.

You will need to have full private healthcare paid for a full year.

If you achieve that then you can move over to Spain and apply for residency.

Once you have first moved to Spain I suggest that you rent an apartment/villa and make sure you like your chosen area before committing to buy.

You will need to open a bank account and have funds in it for 3 months equal to the visa requirements.

Purchase of other things like cars etc will need to wait until you have residency.

So firstly concentrate on the visa application process.

There is no shortcut and magic answer.

Start by reading through "Spain, tips and Guides" and other tabs at the top of the page.

As Steve says;

Jobs are scarce in Spain and any available work must firstly be offered to an EU citizen. If you can find a job who no-one else can do then the employer will need to sponsor you with a work visa.

You will need private medical insurance and pay for all your medication and dental treatment.
