Hello,

I shall be moving to Benidorm this year. My house sale here in not so sunny Worthing is nearing completion.

I'm retired at 58 with a UK passport.

I've been to Benidorm many times so I'm familiar with the resort.

I'd just like to ask you all for your advice on a few things please.

Re the non lucrative visa I know what's required and meet the criteria for getting one but would it be a good idea to use one of those legal firms to assist with the application and if so do you have any recommendations ?

Re the medical insurance I'm fit and well as far as I know. Do you have any recommendations as to which company to use ?

Once a resident I'd like to get a rescue dog and do some volunteering at one of the rescue centres. Again any advice for me re that please.

My intention is to rent initially. I like the Poniente side so can anybody recommend an immobilaria that side please ?

I have been through some previous posts but any help you can give would be appreciated thanks.

Jason

Hi Jason,

You have to present the initial application for a non lucrative visa personally at the Spanish consulate in the UK. You will need to show (and prove) an income of €28,000 per annum from solid income sources like stocks and shares, pensions etc. You will need to have full private (with no co payments) healthcare paid for a full year. Be careful not to be persuaded to pay Gestors or Solicitors that say they can present your application because they cannot.

Sorry I can't personally recommend any insurance companies.

I have lived in Benidorm for years and love it here. There are several Dog Rescue centres that will be glad for volunteers to help.

The NLV is only part of the application for residency in Spain. You cannot just move to Spain and apply for residency without a visa.

Hi Steve,

thanks for your reply.

I'm fortunate to have a pension and some savings and point taken re the Gestors.

It would be easier to move straight to Spain but I understand that I must get the visa before doing so.

I've really grown to like Benidorm as there's something for everyone and I want to be busy so some volunteering sounds good.

Jason,

You definitely will need some sort of visa to be able to residency in Spain. To live here permanently will make you an illegal immigrant and an overstay of the 90 day rule. Both those carry heavy penalties.

Try every way to get here legally as it will be worth the effort 👌

As tebo53 has advised you must apply for the visa in the UK. You really don't want to affect your chances of a successful outcome by being an 'overstayer' in your dream country. The link below should provide you with the necessary information. I don't think it necessary to engage expensive lawyers as the instructions are pretty much self explanatory.

Hi Jason, my partner and I moved here four and a half years ago. We took out private health insurance with ASSSA and have no complainta about their service.

The big selling point for me was that they guaranteed that their annual premiums would only increase by the rate of inflation maximum, regardless of your age. Some companies make big increases as you reach milestone ages. Make sure you check out that aspect. ASSSA have been true to their word and have increased the premiums very modestly.

When you reach UK state pension age, of course, you can be admitted to the Spanish health service and drop the private policy if you wish.

Don't become a Spanish resident until the second half of the year or you might become liable to Spanish capital gains tax. Get advice.

Thanks for the link very helpful.

As you say having read through it carefully I should be able to do it myself.

Thanks for your reply.

I was considering ASSSA.

I didn't know about the premium  issue so very helpful advice.

That's the good thing about this forum always someone able to help.
