Hi, I am hoping to move to Spain from the UK later this year.

Is it correct that I will have to pay 21% Spanish tax on EVERYTHING I bring into Spain? Or is it just payable on new things?

I was advised to photograph my items I intend to bring to prove they are not brand new & are my own goods & personal items.

I will use a company to bring my goods in, not myself.

Appreciate the correct information as I am now rather confused & please any tips will be welcome Jo.

No, if you are moving on relocation and taking up residency your household goods can be, in the main, imported without paying tax.

You need a detailed list of the goods, estimated value and approximate date of purchase. You can apply for the VAT exemption within 12 months of moving to Spain or, if you are sending the goods ahead, within 6 months before you move if you can show you have applied for a visa or residency.

Goods that are exempt

  • Imports destined for personal use, for your family or home needs as long as it does not contribute to a business or professional activity.

  • Domestic animals and portable tools that are necessary for your profession or job (these will be considered to be for personal use).

  • Bicycles, motorcycles and cars for private use, as well as trailers, caravans and recreational boats.

You must show you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months and that the goods are not new but a minimum of 6 months old including cars.Goods that are not exempt
  • Alcohol and tobacco products (the amount that exceeds the standard import limits for personal use)

  • Comercial transport

  • Imports for professional us

You just need to show you have resided outside the EU continuously for a minimum period of 12 months, show that you are moving to take up residency and show the goods are your personal items which have been used for 6 months or more outside th EU.If using a removal company, ensure that they have all the details of the goods being sent to Spain.Simply specify you are claiming the VAT exemptions due to changing your residency from another country to Spain.Best of luck on your move

If you are a UK passport holder:

Do you have all the requirements to gain a visa to be able to move to Spain permanently?

A couple of websites that may be of help are:

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain for bureaucratic stuff, and

N332 for anything to do with driving in Spain.   The site, and their Facebook page, is for English speaking people, is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil and has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code on it.

I moved all my household possessions from UK (Wokingham) to Spain in March 2021 - so affected by the new rules etc. My removal company took care of all the paperwork - including an inventory etc. There was extra paperwork in the background but nothing to concern me and all went smoothly.

However, think twice about spending c£10K on the exercise as there is nothing in the UK that you cannot get in Spain. Also, your UK furniture may not suit your new Spanish home .............especially if a New Build!! I'm speaking from experience but respect this may not apply to you. Best of luck with your plans. Exciting times!!
