Hi, I have just had my English car registered in Spain. How do I go about advising the DVLA back in the UK and how do I get my remaining tax refunded. I have looked on the DVLA web site but I cant make head nor tail of it.  Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Shelagh1

Not that I’ve done this or know for sure, but my guess is, you just inform DVLA that the vehicle is SORN. I do know that declaring it as such will prompt an automatic refund of any remaining road tax, to the address the car was registered to in the U.K. 🤪🥂

Morning Peter

You’re absolutely right. I’ve just checked (as I’m in the U.K.) and it’s section 5 🤪🥂

You must tell the DVLA if your taking the vehicle out of the UK.

This is known as permanent export. You`ll need to :

1, Fill in the permanent export section of your vehicle log book (V5C).

2, Send it to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD, Include a letter if you`ve moved abroad and want your vehicle tax refund,(if your entitled to one) sent to your new address.

3, Keep the rest of your log-book (V5C) - you need it to register your vehicle in the country you`re taking it to.

If you`ve already left the UK.

Contact the driving authority of the country you`re taking the vehicle to. they`ll tell you what documents you`ll need to provide to register the vehicle there. You also need to send a letter to DVLA to tell them you`ve taken the vehicle out of the country (UK), Include your name and address, the date you took the vehicle out of the country (UK), Where the DVLA can send the vehicle tax refund (if you`re entitled to one). DVLA Swansea SA99 1BA.
