Of course there is no war between the two road users although sometimes it seems that way. But after five years of observation as both a motorist and cyclist on Spanish roads I thought I would put down a few thoughts about driving and cycling in Spain.

Motorists:

  • According to the Spanish highway code, a motorist is held responsible for any (yes any) accident between a vehicle and a bicycle. It is the drivers responsibility to then prove otherwise.
  • Passing a cyclist/s should be done at low speed (the draft can cause a cycle to veer of course and cause an accident)
  • 1,5 meters is the MINIMUM space a vehicle must allow when passing a cyclist.
  • It is allowed to cross the solid white line when overtaking a cyclist
  • Any vehicle must wait to pass a cyclist/s if there are oncoming vehicles.

Cyclists:

  • Cyclist will ride as near to the side of the road as is safe.
  • It is advised and safer for cyclists to ride two abreast in order that passing vehicles can do so quickly and effectively.
  • A good cyclist will not stop in front of a vehicle at traffic lights.
  • A good cyclist gives clear hand signals.
  • A good cyclist obeys all the road signs.

Over the past few years I have observed motorists on the Spanish roads and I am ashamed and sorry to say that British registered vehicles are the worst of all drivers. So please lets ALL be safe on the lovely Spanish roads and work together.

An appropriate time to be reminded of the issues given recent events on the N332. In recent weeks a driver fours times over the legal drink drive limit crossed over the carriageway and ploughed into a group of cyclists injuring three and on an other occasion there where three fatalities when a driver flowed into a group of cyclists.

Both drivers and cyclists have a responsibility to respect each other and to follow the rules of the road. On too many occasions drivers seem to see cyclists as fair game while some cyclists seem to think they are invincible and that the rules of the road don't apply to them.

Time for all to consider each other's journey and to allow for safe driving and riding.

So true John.

That's all I am saying. Mutual respect and follow the Highway code. :)

I wish Britain would follow, too many deaths, near misses I include myself in this,, I've observed total respect when in spain of cyclists on the dreaded roundabouts,(still confused how they drive) so I can't wait to start cycling over there,

For guidance on Spanish Traffic Law look at the N332 website and the tab for that subject, you will find an excellent ebook that has been produced to help people from outside Spain to get to know more about driving here.

My wife is a very keen cyclist and has visited Majorca frequently to enjoy the safe cycling on the island. When I went with her it was noticeable that aggression did not exist, unlike in the UK. Here she has been the target of many nutters who deliberately pass within a few inches of her often shouting foul abuse as they go.

She hired a bike in Benidorm in January and did a fair amount of cycling and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We have been frequent visitors to Bulgaria and she found it safe out there too, with traffic making allowance to pass safely. If you have ever driven in BG you will know what a paradox this is.

There is absolutely no need for aggression - and I am not a cyclist.

Pete.

For perhaps easier access to the driving rules, look at:

I know it's good - I'm one of the people who wrote it!

Do you mean Brits are the worst when it comes to the way they drive in relation to cyclists, or just in general?

(If the latter, I would disagree - younger drivers of one particular gender in Spanish registered vehicles are by far the worst that I see on a daily basis. They tend to tailgate, overtake dangerously and pay more attention to their mobile phones than the road, in my experience.)

...

I'm thinking in particular to their behaviour towards cyclists.
