Hello, complete newbie to this forum and looking for any advice available on one way van hire from the UK. My husband and I are planning to drive over via ferry with our two dogs in September this year and wondered if anyone has rented a van in the UK and driven over?

My wife and I made the journey from Essex to Benijofar just 2 weeks ago.

Hired a van from J HIRE Ltd in Salisbury, took ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, drove to Albacete and completed our journey to Benijofar on the Friday. Van then dropped off at Jacarilla.

Minimum hire 4 days at £135.00 per day plus 2 additional days at £75.00 a day, totalled £690.00

We used Howells in nearby Formentera, www.howells-removals.com

They were great for transporting our gear and - even more importantly - storing it until we were able to find room for it at our Benijofar home! 😎

Hi, on top of hire charge, adding the cost of the ferry charge and fuel costs, did you count up a total cost all in for the journey? Do you know how much you brought by weight?Did you return or stay, as we would return by air too. Just trying to get a cost of diy hiring a vehicle as opposed to using a transport company.

Many thanks in advance for your information.

Regards

Pauline.

Cost approx £200 in fuel, about €18.00 in tolls. We stayed in Ibis Portsmouth on the night before sailing £90.00 and £105.00 for evening meal, hotel and breakfast in Albacete on route. Approx £550.00 for the ferry Portsmouth to Bilbao with double bed cabin.

Van was a one way hire and was packed to the hilt approx 1500kgs payload (almost entire contents of a three bed house).

Thankyou for all that detail, we have our own van but only done 1 load(lwb sprinter with payload of 1.3ton). We have done it once and will do again in March, but reason for my query was if we had to get rid of our van as hubby 76 and not so agile, what were we looking at to continue transporting. Our home is large cluttered 4bed going into an even larger 5bed(grandkids etc). So we couldnt fit into 3 vans full never mind 1 van We have stuck to payload and checked weight beforehand, amazingly 1.3ton was half a van! So much space left but scared to overload as we,re not lucky people. We drove nightime from Newcastle upon Tyne to Portsmouth for early ferry and our home is just past Albacete so no hotel stops and fuel was about the same £200 but that was for both ways. Your ferry fare was a lot dearer than we pay but we are members to get discount. Anyway thats given us more idea of cost without our own van and I hope you,ve nicely settled now. Thanks

Regards

Pauline.
