Is your son driving direct from Spain to the UK, or is he travelling via France?

In restaurants and bars you need to show your vaccinations via a hard copy or an EU app, we use the French APP, and it was regularly checked, even in Cafes adjoin supermarkets.

You need to check the French requirements carefully, when we drove from the UK to Spain in August we needed an antigen test not more than 24 hours before our tunnel booking to enter France. Having said that we have never been stopped at the Spain/French border either way when driving

We drove from Spain to the UK, via France, a couple of weeks ago.  To enter France, their government website said we needed to complete a French health declaration, which has to be done within 48 hours of arriving in France.  Unlike the UK and Spanish systems, it's a printable form, so your son can just print one off (which you can find via the link I've given you) and take it with him, signing and dating it en route.  We went across the Spanish/French border at Iruña and weren't stopped, but I wasn't going to risk being challenged for not having it.

The UK's Passenger Locator Form must be done within 48 hours of arriving in the UK and that will be verified when he checks-in at the Chunnel, as will proof of purchase of the required tests.

Will he be returning to Spain any time soon?

Correct me if I am wrong, if a person is "unvaccinated" travelling to the UK, to enter the UK the person has to have a negative PCR test a minimum of 72 hours before entry, then they either go into self-isolation and have PCR tests on day 2 and day 8, if negative they can end isolation on Day 10.  or have to book into a Government hotel for Isolation (Hotel to be booked and paid for in full before travel), this location is to be declared on the UK Health Form.
