Hi everyone.

Well just 2 weeks to go until we emigrate to Benimar...counting the days, hours and minutes lol.

Does anyone have any experience and advice on purchasing a second hand car from a private individual seller? We have been told many horror stories of purchasing from private individuals and have been strongly urged to purchase from a second hand car dealership, the only problem is that we don't think we can stretch to that as all of the hidden taxes and costs involved in the move have pretty much wiped us out financially and I've been looking on a website called Ooyyo and it appears that buying from a private seller is ever so much cheaper for a like for like vehicle than purchasing it from a dealership.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can always try this website https://www.milanuncios.com/coches-de-segunda-mano/

Someone also posted recently about a great dealer (I appreciate, this is NOT a private individual) and their website is http://www.fwreurocars.com/

Hope it helps

Buying a used car in Spain is Russian roulette, but instead of one shell you get one empty chamber. Absolutely no one sells a vehicle in good condition but keeps it as long as it runs. All of them are overpriced, and a "guarantee" is worth nothing. If you don't know the seller personally very well, better stay away. A renown car rental company (Hertz, AVIS) might be an exception, they usually sell their vehicles after 9 months without any maintenance inbetween except oil refill where necessary. Pay for a good general overhaul and you (can) have a deal.

Exactly.... I would refract the question of "Why be on a forum to help people if you're going to be a total cock womble with your pathetic and unfriendly response". I have reported the comment to the moderators.

We are moving as a family, my widowed pensioner mother, my 44 year old Brother and Myself 46, we are and have always been a hardworking family. Not that I have to explain myself to the likes of that unfortunate person, but due to many hidden costs we hadn't anticipated on (in excess of €30k) our "spending money/savings has almost been obliterated.

At least the majority of you on here are helpful and friendly Villas, you in particular have given me some very good advice on my previous questions THANK YOU 😎

Be aware that if you buy privately, you need the purchase/sale contract and a copy of the vendor's DNI/NIE. You then need to go to the tax office and pay transfer tax, and then to the traffic office and pay for the transfer.

It's also advisable to get an informe on the vehicle before purchase to confirm details like ownership and any debts on the vehicle.

It is relativity easy to do all the transfer yourself, once you know where to go.

To be honest buying a car here or anywhere else comes with the same problems. Carry out a check of the car whether its a dealer or private sale. The same deterioration troubles would need to be looked at either from a dealer of a private seller.

If you buy private you can get a gestoria to organise the change of name etc for you if you are not wanting to visit the offices yourself.

"Absolutely no one sells a vehicle in good condition but keeps it as long as it runs."

What a crass and distorted assertion!

What you're saying then is that every single used vehicle offered for sale, be it by main dealer, independent garage, or individual, is a totally knackered piece of sh1t with so many faults and problems that you'd be lucky to get it home without it collapsing in an irredemable heap at the roadside and that's patently ridiculous on every possible level.

It's true that prices for used cars are of a magnitude we from the UK are completely bemused by but there are good reasons for that, principally the Spanish (and many other European nations) are not as shallow and materialistic as people in UK and have neither need nor desire to impress the neighbours by having a new car on the drive every other year, they aren't obsessed by resale values either so don't go scurrying off to the paint shop for every tiny scratch or stone chip.

Also the company car culture in UK ensures a continuous supply of relatively young and well maintained cars which keeps values and prices at low levels.

If you exercise the same due diligence as you would anywhere else there is no reason to expect buying a used car in Spain to be any more a gamble or disappointment than anywhere else.
