Another topic stopped due to political opinions being voiced!

Lets stick to why this Forum was started helping each other out!

RobScot, I don´t think a reasonable discussion of any viewpoint open on this forum is a problem.

".......continuing to keep our forums friendly and open to all.......... members may have lots of questions, so thank you for being patient and polite when replying."

Is more the point.

With respect.

I understand what you say, but, you & I can discuss (as we are now) without mal-discourse or debate, without being discourteous or to personal abuse. I hope others are capable.

I think all of us who are about to reply to anything,  should just read the polite notice Alex has kindly highlighted in greenand take a second to read the words first, and then think if it's a good idea to post a reply, it's worked for me !!

Unfortunately every single political topic seems to decend into abuse, so easier to lock it instead of going through and deleting posts. If people want to have a calm discussion without any personal insults then of course those would never be locked or removed!

Maybe after lockdown people will be more calm

Hi, CostaCouple;

I certainly do have political interest & opinions & agree with you, no matter what we are discussing be it in our political life dictated by those in control of our destiny (Brexit, EU, or even UK)

My life (& many others) at the moment are being made by decisions concerning the pandemic & many other issues & therefore feel involved. Each day, we all hear via direct government sources of via the media & political changes & directives. We don´t all agree, but feel unrestrained by anyone to deny my "say".

If we can all talk sensibly we all may learn. That is a good forum.

I fully agree with you, quote: ..... "would not want to try and force my views on you and you do not try and force your view on me."

Finally & I will quote my father.

"Enter into a discussion, be it politics, religion or whatever. But remember, it is like a field with two entrance gates. Always be prepared to leave the gate in which you entered. Just enjoy the freedom you have whilst you are in it. That is your right & your freedom."

With respect.

I hope othes listen to what you have said, for the same reasons I made the post.

It would be great to see the tone of the Forum return to one of helpful advice and occasional friendly banter and humour without descending into nastiness and rudeness.

Hi Nicola. You’re absolutely right, as was seen on a recent thread. There are also have members that appear to wish to say their “piece” but subsequent resort to personal insult and innuendo. At least twice in the last week I’ve suggested that we’re mindful of how we respond to posts to which we might not concur. I’ve found it very surprising that no one replied to those suggestions. I’ve also noticed that two female members appear to have withdrawn from posting after being subject to what, only in my opinion you understand, is a lack of acceptance that they had a legitimate opinion. Indeed, one was actually offering assistance rather than opinion. Barely a word from anyone.

Hi Ray D, though not exclusively,

Since I arrived in Spain, I've had the benefit of learning from your posts and those of other legendary members over the last couple of years and am eternally grateful for all of the advice that you have dispensed, without which I would be none the wiser and considerably worse off.

However, can I please bring to your attention that there are more than two political party's in the UK.

There may be two major? party's in England.

I would suggest that in these enlighten times, it would be more diverse and inclusive, if people, whether they are old hands like you, or the influx of newer members to the forum, when they refer to the UK, that they include the devolved parliaments of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. I hope I'm not being a Leftie when I suggest this.

Should politics be spoken about? Absolutely! Like you Villas, I don't see why not. so long as it is done, as Nicola Sturgeon would suggest, in a grown up manner.

The Scottish Nationalist Party is the 3rd biggest party in the UK, having more members in the Westminster Parliament than the remaining party's combined. (Before anyone takes me to task), Nicola Sturgeon is on record as saying that, she would've chosen a different name to differenciate between the connotations of Nationalists meaning Neo Nazis and the self interest of the current President of The USA.

In the UK, We are TOLD/taught/advised/encouraged from an early age not to talk about 4 topics:

1 Children should not speak unless spoken to/children should be seen and not heard.

2 Don't discuss politics.

3 Don't talk about football. This may or may not be exclusive to the West of Scotland.

4 Under NO circumstances talk about..... sex. After all we're British.

All of which leaves us at best, lagging in ideology, behind our European neighbours, at worst stunted in our collective, inward, insular approach to the rest of the world.

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is that, we either lived in the past or presently live in a democracy. No one ought to be discouraged from voicing their opinion. It would be to the betterment of the forum if we were able to do this with civility.

Just a couple of points to ponder.

A final thought would be that as recently as 45 years ago, circa 1975, I was in a school class during a Spanish lesson when my Spanish teacher jubilantly exclaimed that Juan Carlos had been coronated King of Spain.

Question: Without Ray D's and other legendary members' input, would be living in another world? eg, In the era of General Francisco Franco?

As always, most of my posts are designed to be of assistance. Hope my latest post has not offended anyone.

Que suenen con los angelitos.
