I am in the process of arranging a short term rental in Benissa so that I have something set up for me and my pets when we arrive on November 1, 2018.  They have requrested a substantial bank transfer and don't accept credit cards or paypal.  I am reluctant to do this because of security issues.

Is this a safe thing to do?  Is it routine? I have 72 hours to make a decision.

Thanks to you all.  I couldn't do this without you.

Bonnie

Private owners can't accept credit cards or Paypal. We would do it if we can.

Most of our renters (holiday lets) pay us using BACS, a few still send a cheque, as we can't take credit cards.  We have our own private Paypal account but can't use that for rental payments as that is classified as business.  So yes, if you are renting short-term it is normal to pay by BACS.  If the property you are renting is a holiday let then it should be licensed so check out their license number before doing the transfer.  However long-term lets (anything over 30 nights) are not licensed.  Alternatively you can offer to post them a cheque and see how they respond.

Since it is a transfer, the police can track very very easy I would trust him. You have emails where you are in contact with him speaking about topic of renting. On transfer write "Rental November"

Would be worse to pay Paypal as friend.

I highly recommend not to pay any amounts for something you haven't seen to someone you don't know in person. Such money is gone forever and you have little or no chances to ever get it back.

I guess that if you dont pay something in front the owner will not keep the property for you since he can not be sure if really you are going to rent.

Presumably you also have a contract so agreed the payment dates.  Contracts should be produced for all rentals, short or long term.  We get signed contracts from our guests before taking any payments so everyone is aware of what is expected from each party.  In fact payment details are also set out on the original booking form too.  If it is a legal holiday let and you have a contract and all the details of who you are paying then no worries.  No contract, no details of who the people are, where they live, contact details etc, no license (if a holiday let) then not legal and don't touch it.

Thank you.  Very helpful.  I was just concerned because the transfer address is a personal address and that didn't seem like it was right.

I know and they want 40% of three months rent upfront as well as 1000 euros for a damage deposit.  Also, I'm to do the wire transfer to an individual's account.
