l opened a new bank account with Bankinter Moraira early March. lt was agreed that as long as l paid in 1000€ per month from Uk, there would be NO bank charges.  l opened the account couple days before the lockdown, so Bankinter hadn't shown me how to do online banking.  l needed to transfer a large amount to the Notary. l rang Bankinter who told me Moraira branch was closed due to CV. But their Calpe branch was open. They also said they couldn't show me how to do online banking until Moraira branch was open again after lockdown was part lifted.  l transferred the money in Calpe branch. Then when  Moraira branch was open, l went in to ask to be shown how to do online banking. They said l would have to go back the following week, l also go a statement which showed l had been charged hundreds of euros in commission. They said this was because l hadn't don't the transfer online ! l was very firm, and pointed out l had no choice but to go to Calpe branch to do the transfer.  Last week they said l would receive all the commission bar 30€ back into my bank by last Friday. Today, l had an email to say, they would return 50% Or if l took out a health insurance policy  or similar with them , they would return all the money they took out of my account.  l made an appointment for `11.30am today (wish me luck, l need it !!!)    l'd be grateful for any recommendations for an honest bank that l can trust. Thanks in advance,

We are using Sabadell, they deal mainly with English speakers.

Been with Sabadell for about five years, both as a non resident and resident, never had any problems, English speaking staff in every branch I have used, fantastic Online Banking service.

I agree with both posters above regarding Sabadell. The extra you pay is well worth the service. I see so many people on the forum looking for the cheapest banking, then lots of complaints about it all when it goes wrong.

Once you are resident no charges when you switch to their Expansion Account and have your pension paid in.

Agreed John, I was really meaning non residents who try to do banking on the cheap then run into trouble that they wouldn't have had if they'd chosen Sabadell. Yes, for a non res it's €140 per annum but for peace of mind that you have English speaking staff, faultless app in English, worth it in my opinion.

Hi, I have been reading a lot about pensions paid into Spanish bank accounts, what exchange rates do they get or is it worked out on the day it’s transferred? Thank you, stay safe and healthy.

Don't know about State Pension as not old enough yet, different private pensions will use different transfer methods and you would need to check with your provider.

Prior to retirement the Overseas Pensions administration for the State Pension will ask you if you want it paid in sterling to a UK account or euros to your Spanish account. Most people opt to have it paid directly to their Spanish account as the exchange rate is better than what is available to the general public.
