For some time we have been looking at relocating from the UK to the Benissa area, which we know well. My wife's parents have had a villa in Calpe for thirty years, so we have been frequent visitors. With the continued uncertainty over our relationship with the EU we have rather put things on hold but the dream remains.

I have just been made redundant from Thomas Cook but have a small business sideline producing model railway accessories which could be developed further into a full-time operation.

What is the general feeling over there? Is Brexit and the possible affect on UK citizen's rights and healthcare a major worry?

As things currently stand (pre-Brexit) if you are of pensionable age in the UK, you can obtain Spanish NHS healthcare here (reciprocal arrangements).

If you are below UK pensionable age -

- if you work in Spain (legally) and pay income tax, you can access the Spanish NHS

- if you don't work, you have to pay for private healthcare in order to obtain Residency.

Brits in Spain (or aspiring to retire to Spain) lose out big time under a no-deal scenario. Healthcare is a big issue.

We are looking to do the same thing but with no business we will have taken early retirement with a private pension only to start with. Are you saying that we won’t be able to become a resident after Brexit. My husband does have an EU and British passport. There is also a possibility that I can also apply for an EU passport.

You will still be able to gain Residency, but the admission hurdle will be higher.

You will need private healthcare (as now), but it appears that your demonstrable income requirements will be higher.

Pre-Brexit the required income is around 700-800 Euros per month per person. After Brexit, this seems likely to increase to around 2400 Euros per month per person.

Thank you Kelvin. So basically an income of 4800 Euros per married couple. Would savings be taken into account as income. My pension pot would mainly come from the sale of our house. Is this whether there is a deal or not?

Thank you for your reply Ray. My husband has an Irish passport as his father was Irish. I am looking into applying for an Italian passport as my mum was Italian but this is not as straight forward.

Deal or no-deal, it doesn't matter, If Britain leaves the EU, the higher hurdle will be applied.

I can't answer your question on savings .... there have been different experiences with this subject, and, of course, those of us on this forum who already have Residency gained it while Europe was a (relatively) happy family.

For what it might be worth, when my wife and I gained Residency the authorities showed no interest in our UK incomes. All they wanted to see was a history of regular monthly transfers of (the necessary) money from our UK bank to our Spanish bank. They only looked at the Spanish bank records, not the British bank.

Hi Ray,  so €2400 per person income per month.  That seems an awful lot of money, we don't earn that in the UK,  and why the increase from 750 per month?  Will the UK do this to the Spanish coming to live in the UK?.  How do you know this increase will happen after Brexit?  We want to move over, buy a property, have a lump left over, would that count as an income?  Thanks

The 2400€ requirement is not something new because of Brexit, it has been at this level for years for people from Non EU Countries which is what the U.K. will be after Brexit.
