I am looking to drive down to my place in Bigastro when allowed with a van full of white goods, carpets, sheds and timber etc. I have been told that I might have to pay an import tax. These are my own goods to use in my own place and not for re - sale.

Can anyone enlighten me ?

Thanks in advance.

The big question is are you a resident? If not then import duty, customs clearing charges, iva at 21% would all be applicable.

Used household items are usually exempted from taxes and duties as long as you can convince Spanish customs that everythingl is for your own home. I'd do the following. Set up a detailed inventory of all items stating their actual trade value (instead of so many forks and knives just cutlery etc.) Take this inventory and proof of ownership of your home in Spain to the nearest Spanish Consulate and let them set up a sworn declaration - they know what you need. Show this declaration to the Spanish customs officer, and as long as nothing seems to be brand new, you'll get away. Should you travel through France, I do not know how French customs handle these things, in earlier times filling a form "D30ter" was good enough.

Thanks, might have problem explaining why I haven't furnished earlier as deeds are from 2006. Not sure where Consulate is nearest to Newcastle. When you say "usually" that's before January and we did 2 ferry trips no problems but not now. Its the non residency that makes the differrence. Why shouldn't a 2nd home owner have as much comfort and luxury for that 6months(2x3) as primary residence in Uk.

Hi Pauline. IVA at 21% of what value. IE a 5 years old TV at £2500 when new.. What value now ? If I decided to go back to UK in the future I would be exporting my own furniture that I imported 2 years ago. So the goods were purchased in the UK with UK taxes applied and would be exported back to the UK. Technically taxes already paid in the destination country.

It appears you determine a "fair" 2nd hand value to your goods to customs, but if you are changing prime residence either way you will be exempt for any charges as you will have to produce your residency certificate each time to customs to negate the charges. It also appears customs expect you to have done this within 3months of moving but can be extended to first year. After that there may be problems explaining time frame.
