Does anyone have experience of getting health insurance after having a gastric bypass?

Is it even possible?

I am on the understanding that all medical conditions will come under pre existing conditions with any private health insurance and will be excluded from the policy, perhaps do a web search for local insurance companies and get some information and quotes.

I await to hear from an insurance agent.

Hello,

To be able to get covered for any pre-existing conditions you must always comunicate this to the insurance company (only if they ask the specific question), because if you don't and the insurance company finds out, they will automatically not cover you and in some cases cancel your policy.

If you want to find out if the company will cover you, you will have to go through the medical questionaire, as every company has different criterias. Sometimes they will exclude that specific procedure you've had and things related to it, or they will add an excess to be able to cover the pre-existing condition.

I also suggest that, since you do have a pre-existing condition and of course subjected to the company accepting you, is that you look into a company that offer lifetime coverage, so in case of high medical expenses, age or serious illness, they can't cancel your policy. As far as I am aware, in Spain there is only two companies that have this coverage; DKV and AXA.

If you need any help or advice, please feel free to drop me a message as I work in an insurance agency throught AXA.

Have done that thank you.I hade been trying to get a quote from Cigna but there responses were one liners and far from helpful. Just need to figure out how much cover I need!  Its so complicated.  When you have your residency I gather you can opt for the convenio especial?  How do expats feel about this? Is it a good option? Then whats the next step, recieving a pension and the S1. Can anyone enlighten me?

I am on the understanding that you are below the UK state pensionable age, Once you have obtained residency in Spain with private health insurance (what-ever cover re pre existing conditions applied) after one year of residency you can apply for the Generalitat Valenciana Convenio Especial Scheme that allows you to pay to be able to access the state health scheme, The cost of joining the scheme is 60 euro if you are under 65 years of age and 157 euro if you are over the age of 65 a month, there are no exclusions for pre existing conditions, if applying for the Convenio Especial Scheme you will need to contact the NHS Business Authority Overseas Healthcare Service to inform them of your status in Spain and how long you have lived  in Spain and that for that period of time you have had some form of Health cover and have not used the NHS in anyway why you have been living/Resident in Spain, this can be achieved by telephoning the NHSBSA on +44 (0) 191 218 1999, once satisfied with your answers to there questions, the NHSBSA will send to your Spanish address within 14 days of posting in English and translated to Spanish that based on the information you provided, the UK is not the responsible authority for your Healthcare, This letter then should be taken with other application documentation required to join the Covenio Especial Scheme through a appointment to your local Instituto Nacional de Seguridad Social (INSS) =Spanish Social Security Office, I am on the understanding the process for this can take over 3 months to achieve, so bear in mind when to give cancelation notice of your Private health insurance, normally one months notice is acceptable. When you are entitled to your UK State pension, again get in touch with the NHSBSA and inform them you require your entitlement to the S1 health scheme and again you will be required to got to your local Spanish Social Security Office (INSS) to register. Good Luck.

Speak to Alfonso at Gran Alacant Insurance, he’s highly recommended on this forum and sorted our private health insurance. Over the last two years he’s been incredibly helpful.

You need to look into Non Lucrative Visa, search this website, there is plenty of information supplied.
