Probably fireworks, sometimes they seem to be let off for no particular reason.
Could possibly be something to do with the Pilgrimage of San Isidro.

Get used to very loud fireworks going off seemingly randomly.
From October to about February it is the hunting season so most weekends the guns start at 8 am.
There are also a few quarries in the general area.

Hi Mark,
Cheryl's correct, it's for the Pilgrimage of San Isidro. I was talking to my Spanish teacher about it on Thursday, because in our area (Rojales), we celebrate San Isidro on 15 May. However, in some areas (my teacher lives in Bigastro) apparently they celebrate the following Saturday, because they get roaring drunk and need the following day to sleep off the "resaca" - hangover!
Kind regards,
Kim
