Can someone recommend where I can get meters installed for two aircon units, as I will be renting my apt out for the summer months and don’t want extortionate electric bills if people leave them on day and night!

We have a rental and have air con in all rooms, so 4 units.  We use Ecosense products rather than a meter.  Renters aren't keen on having to pay extra but if you use products that alter the way the units can be used it will save you money and help with the units not being pushed to their limit by people setting them too low.  We use the replacement remote controls adn in the lounge only have a sensor as well.

Thank you for getting back to me. I did look into this but think my units are prob too old. Also my renters are mainly my own family who will not be paying anything to stay there! My 20 yr old granddaughter would prob just forget and leave them both on when they go out, not even thinking about the expense!

So will arrange to get meters put in. Best wishes, Jill

The whole point of the Ecosense is to save wear on your units and it turns them off when no one is in! if you have a coin box they can be left on full blast wearing them out when no one is in and if its the middle of the night and they don't have change NO A/C.

Agreed re Ecosense.  The service engineer noticed a difference in the units this year when he serviced them - they hadn't been thrashed.  Our electricity bill over the summer was consierably down too despite full occupancy.  We use the replacement controllers on all four units and just a sensor in the lounge but we are thinking of getting the sleep sensors for the bedrooms too.  Well worth the investment.  Much more discreet than a money box, much more 'user friendly' from the renters perspective as they can't tell the unit has been pre-set to not go below a certain temperature or that they can't have them on max fan either.  And simple to use controller too.  I just wish I had found them sooner!  Bev

We allow friends and family to use the house in low season (we are fully booked every year through the summer so if they want in season they pay full rates - it is how we pay our mortgage after all!).  But we also ask for a nominal payment to cover the expenses - they are getting free accommodation so no reason why they shouldn't cover your electricity and water etc.  They also have to pay our keyholder her standard cleaning fee as that is her income so we can't waive that (and she is still on call for them when they are there if any problems) - it also means the house is set up properly before they arrive and cleaned ready for the next occupants after they go to the usual high standards.  As Willy said, it is about saving on the wear and tear on your units as well as saving money.  Bev

Thanks Bev. Yes it does seem a good idea. The meters are quite expensive to instal. I have written to Ecosense for them to explain how it all works and give a quote. Thankyou. Jill

They have a youtube video that is helpful, I couldn't have done it without following the video - once you get the hang of how to set the replacement controls it is easy - a bit time consuming and boring, but you only do it for each unit once and never again.  I had to set 4 of them and that was really tedious!
