we take the ferry from Cork to Santander . We have a 10 year old Labrador , so we book a pet friendly cabin . It's a comfortable crossing and when we arrive we have only about a 9 hour drive to Costa Blanca.

The ferry is about 32 hours but is quite comfortable . You can have the animal with you in the cabin. There is an area where you can walk them etc. We have been travelling this way for the last 3 years.

Hi Maire,

If you're moving permanently to Spain, are you aware of Leishmaniasis?  It's a disease carried by the Sandfly Mosquito, endemic in the Mediterranean basin and affects both dogs and cats.  The symptoms are many and varied - actually, some anmimals contract it and never show any symptoms.  Unfortunately, at the other end of the scale, it can be debilitating and fatal.  In its milder form, cutaneous, it affects the skin, with paws and ears, in particular, splitting and causing itchy, scaley sores.  In its worst form, where it affects the internal organs, it is often fatal.  In the last few years, a vaccination has been developed, which is regarded as around 85% effective - combined with a collar, such as Seresto, it's currently regarded as the best combination protection available.  I took the view that, although the vaccine is currently only 85% effective, that's better than nothing.  The Seresto collar lasts 7-8 months and is waterproof - I get them from our local Tiendaninal store, but you can also order them online:

https://www.tiendanimal.es/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=Seresto

The vaccine is relatively cheap to administer - your pet has to have a blood test first (€15 at our vet) to check that they don't already have the disease and then the vaccine itself - our vet offers a single vaccine for €60, or a course of 3 injections, given 2 weeks apart, totalling €45.  We opted for the single injection as it meant our woof would be protected quicker.  Every year, your pets will need to have a booster - so long as you don't exceed the annual anniversary, the booster can be given without the need for a further blood test.

I'm sure you could have your pets vaccinated in Ireland, but as you have 3 of them, it will almost certainly be cheaper to have them done as soon as you arrive in Spain.

Good luck with your move.

Kind regards,

Kim
