French Senator Corinne Imbert is proposing a 5 year 6 month visa for non- resident second homes owners.

If that suceeds hopefully Spain could follow. She said there are 86,000 Bristish second home owners in France and their contribution to the French economy is to be valued..

She proposes that the visa would be for all second-home owners living outside the EU and would be for five years, allowing visits for up to six months at a time in each year of its validity without extra paperwork.

She said: “Many of us have second-home owners in our departments.

“They’ve been here a long time and are really integrated into the life of our villages, including the local associations, so it is important.”

It good to see a serious politian acknowlodging this issue and maybe second home owners in Spain need to form an alliance to put pressure on the Spanish government. I would think there is many more second home owners in Spain than France. When I hear more I'll let you know.

I will think about that, does anyone already know of of one? The Uk has that is place for foreign nationals home owners or not.

Non residents pay for their property all year round, but I know some have sold due to the 90/180 days as they liked to be in Spain over the winter. It really is a bit of a non-sense. All politics, sadly!

...

Vote to become a Third Country, get treated as a Third Country. It's EU rules, not French or Spanish. And the UK was instrumental in setting up the 90/180 rule when it was an EU member.

Hi Alfapash,

I assume you're referring to an article published on the Schengen Visa Info website today?

https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/french-senator-wants-france-to-issue-special-visas-with-longer-validity-for-second-home-owners/

It's worth noting that the first article referenced from The Connexion was actually published in March 2022 (it's behind a pay wall, so I haven't included the link).

The regional president for Comunidad Valenciana and Spain's Foreign Minister have also made similar statements, but as the Foreign Minister conceded, this is not a decision that Spain can make unilaterally; it has to be approved by the EU.

Kind regards,

Kim

Re the UK being instrumental in setting up the 90/180 day rule: I always thought this rule was set up by the original EU Schengen countries, for the Schengen countries. As the UK was never a Schengen country I would have assumed they had no part in setting the rule. Perhaps that is wrong.

Spanish nationals can stay in the UK for 180 days out of 360, fact.  I do believe that eventually countries within the EU will be granted the facility of making their own decisions re adapting the 90/180 rule, special visas etc (for second home owners). Similar discussions as this have been on the forum since Brexit, it’s ironic really that those who seem to gloat, and dwell on others misfortune with smugness, and say serve you right, are the ones who were lucky enough to have residency prior to Brexit, and in all honesty, most could not afford to do it now, you were lucky. So why not drop the I’m all right Jack attitude and have some sympathy for those who didn’t have the pre Brexit opportunities.
