Hi I have arrived at my apartment to discover a cockroach scurrying across the floor! Any advice on how to deal with this would be much appreciated. First time in 10 years this has happened.

Buy a spray at any supermarket and spray round all doors and windows, make sure food is covered and the kitchen area is clean as a few crumbs will be a feast for them. One is not a problem, it is part of life in this climate, a dozen or more might be a bigger problem and might need a company like Pests R Us Spain to be consulted.

I follow John56's advice. A very, very effective product is Vinfer Maton, specifically for "Cucharas y Hormigas" that is for coakroaches. It comes in an orange can. If you have difficulty finding this product, make sure that what you do buy has "Effecto Residual" (long-lasting effect) on the can. This ensures that once sprayed around the skirting and windows they don't appear for a year. If the product is not of "effecto residual", is likely to be a merely a killer, that is, an insecticide without the preventative, repellent effect.

You're absolutely right "rastrero" does mean something that crawls. I understood it to mean something that "deja rastro" that is, something that "leaves a trace" a long lasting one. I didn't say longevity, but I can see you may mean "longevity of effect". All edited now, so thank you.

Every supermarket has a cucaracha spray that will kill any cockroach that crawls across it. There's no way of getting them when they fly, but they only usually fly when they want to get from A to B quickly. Incidentally, I've seen more cockroaches since the gota fría in September than I've seen in the last thirteen years.

Doo-doo-Doo-doo, Doo-doo-Doo-doo.

In the time I have lived here, only ever one roach.

Gota fria:

Day one: Four in one day -all in bathroom

Day two: Five in one day- all in bathroom

Day three: Trip to supermarket

Every year February March time we spray, round windows and doors, round skirtings, round chimney and cooker outlets to deter, it us normal in a hit climate. You were very lucky if you only had one on your arrival.

I have a significant problem with them on my urbanization. I have only had or saw them inside in my basement but have found them on all my terraces. Worse since gota fria. Unfortunately have a neighbour who does not clean up hence they are breeding on his property and moving on to mine. They are very difficult to control and I have used a variety of insecticides including sprays, powders and granules. I have also used diatomaceous earth and borax but still found droppings and eggs although they were decreasing in number. I have a property in Playa Flamenca and on my last visit noted that within the area itself there is a problem seeing droppings and oothecae/eggs lying on many of the street as well as dead cockroaches. The problem is that if one is seen then there may be many more hiding. Each egg holds around 16 to 20 cockroaches ready to hatch approximately every 8 weeks so they can rapidly multiply.  They can enter your home through the tiniest of cracks and lay eggs frequently. I have used foam filler and silicon to block all holes however small and used silicone around light and electric switches as they and travel within walls and breed there. I have also blocked any holes outside around air conditioning units. I also keep sink and bath plugs closed to prevent them entering through the drains as they also infest drainage systems. I would suggest that you always check around the outside of your property for signs of droppings and eggs and dispose of them away from your home as these attract other cockroaches.

Hi, Everyone has them from time to time. Mercadona sell traps for them and also for ants and they are very effective. If you lift your man hole cover you'll probably find a nest of them which you can spray too. All the best
