Don't mix up alarm with surveillance. An alarm system does not prevent from anything. Installing cameras connected to WiFi is cheaper and more efficient. Police will not consider any report of breaking in etc. unless filed by the owner in person.

I think that is a very wild sweeping statement.

Security alarms do most certainly  have a role to play in Security of Property etc.

When and if, a Security Alarm system is activated, those within the protected property and those within close proximity  of the property are immediately made aware of the activation of the system and at an extremely high audible output.

If the system has been activated by an intruder ,or intruders , the high decibel sound of the Security Alarm bell or siren will,  in the majority of instances, play a large part in them fleeing the scene and preventing the burglary .

The Panic button facility also provides 24 / 7 emergency activation provision from within the protected area.

In addition, modern Security Alarm Systems quite often have the facility of a telephone dialler which can notify authorised remote monitoring  stations ,or, and, pre programmed telephone numbers to notify of the Alarm being activated.

Wi fi cameras are a more recent addition to property protection which  can add and complement a Security Alarm system , but not replace it.

Cameras by wi-fi are only good if they are being monitored and/or if a hard drive back-up is in place. Any burglary will more likely be done & dusted by the time the owner sees any cctv footage 

Steve, although capturing and storing images is desirable,  I wouldn't go as far as saying they are only any good when used in that way.

They can pretty much alert a property owner of an Alarm activation, sending sound and images direct to his or her mobile phone. 

In this way they can, and do provide a valuable function in Crime protection and detection.

As stated earlier, They complement but not replace a Security Alarm system.
