However, after a year you would be eligible to join the Valencian Convenio Especial which gives you cover, at a cost of approx 160 per month each. Can your cover from Portugal not be extended here?

Well, Private health insurance is never cheap. It is age related and also takes into account any pre-existing conditions, even if ‘cured’. You also need to ensure that it comprehensively covers the everything, and not to forget to mention any events from some time ago.

Recently, some American friends, legally resident here and as US citizens, accustomed to paying hugely for PHI, had a claim rejected for the husband for a very serious event, on the grounds that he had had a small claim for the same condition some 10 years previously in the USA. He had declared this on his applications, but they refused to countenance it. They ended up paying the hospital 30K, and that was a special deal as the hospital felt so sorry for them.

Do you qualify for a S1 from the UK? are you UK nationals or maybe Irish nationals? If UK nationals you may need to apply from the UK.

At your age the Convenio Especial would be a good choice but you need to have been on the Spanish padron for 12 months before you become eligible. It is 157 euros, each, per month and it cover any pre-existing conditions.
