Hello Bob

The S1 is a form from the Uk, so  when you reach pension age,  you  can register, with INSS (social security) here, as long as you are legally  resident . That in turn allows residents to go to their local salud & be given a SIP card & allocated a Dr.

You, as a none resident,  can get PHI to cover you for your visits or rely on your EHIC which is " for emergency use during a temporary stay"

Cheers

Hi Bob,

Just to add to the other responses, I assume you know that you will no longer be able to spend 5 months in Spain in one trip?  UK citizens became Third Country Nationals on 1 January 2021, so now have to comply with Schengen travel zone rules, which means a maximum stay of 90 days in a 180 rolling days period.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim, Yes we are aware of the 90 day ruling we visit about 4 times a year, we have a 50 day travel insurance with our bank.

Thank you

Bob

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

I could be mistaken but I thought after 1/1/21 the EHIC was no longer valid except for residents, and even then it needed renewing again now for using in other EU countries. UK has now brought out a GHIC for use abroad for UK residents to replace old EHIC.

Trotter is correct, UK citizens who have existing EHIC cards can continue to use them until they expire; they then need to apply for the GHIC:

Thanks Kim

I stand corrected, mine expired in November hence my renewal was a GHIC,

Most replies re. your query on here are correct, the UK EHIC is indeed still valid until it’s expiry date for emergency treatment only. After it expires you can then apply for a UK governments GHIC. Sensible indeed to have travel insurance, we did too with Staysure insurance who refused to extend our 50 day cover when we were stranded in Spain with no flights back to Scotland until 30th March. The policy runs & is paid up until October, useless in every respect as our 50 day cover has expired.
