Hi Ian,

Since Brexit it is not possible to just move to Spain for residency.

Firstly, and while you are still living in the UK, you will need to apply for a visa from the Spanish consulate in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

You will need to meet the income and healthcare requirements. The income requirements for yourself will be around €28,000 per annum (or a substantial lump sum plus an income). You will need full private healthcare paid for a full year.

If you intend to retire in Spain you will need to apply for the non lucrative visa (NLV)

How to apply for a Non-Lucrative visa (NLV)

If you gain the NLV you can then move to Spain and apply for residency. You do not need an address in Spain for the visa application.

Owning a property here in Spain does not help in any way to gain a visa.

Do not be persuaded to accept sporadic offers of help from the Internet, it could cost you dear!!

If you need any more information please ask.

Steve

Make sure you’re UK home is sold before you arrive here.I went to Manchester Consul to deliver my application which you download from them online. You need a current CRB check,Medical Certificate,Health Insurance in Spain. Also an upto date bank balance 3 days before application is delivered. It tells you everything on the application and how to complete the form. All documents must be translated into Spanish and Apostilled by a registered company. It sounds daunting, but once they grant your visa in UK,when you collect your passport from the Consul your NIE number is stamped on your visa.I was one of the first with this to arrive here,it makes sense. As my Padron and residency were all done in one month during Xmas too.So good luck just get on with it all.You can make your appointment for visa office by email.Your visa costa for a non work permit around £600 dont quote me on it but it’s about that.

Speak to a tax advisor about the sale of your UK property and becoming a Spanish tax resident in the same year. HMRC doesnt charge Capital Gains Tax on the sale of your main home but Spain does. The Spanish tax year runs 1st Jan to 31st Dec so if you get your TIE in the first half of this year you will become liable for Spanish tax for the whole year.
You can also use your savings as part of the income requirements.
Try speaking to either of these to check out the facts as this is info I have picked up but haven't confirmed as luckily we arrived int the July so didn't become fiscal residents until the following January.

I arrived in November. On my application from Spanish Consul in Manchester they require an address in Spain it’s mandatory.I used a friends address. In fact when I went to the consul the guy on the receiving desk cudnt read my writing properly where I had put my address, and queried it.

A couple of websites that may be of help are as follows:

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain for buearucratic stuff, and

N332 for anything to do with driving in Spain.   This site, and their Facebook page, is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people.
