Looking to buy as soon as is practicable 

Can anyone recommend a residential area ie not holiday rental ?

All residential areas seem to have some, or several, holiday lets. Even if you find a nice area someone who lives elsewhere will buy a place in your area for holiday lets and spoil everything. I live in a nice block and the apartment above and the apartment at one side have been sold off to be used as holiday lets. Its spoiled the whole block because of the excess noise created by holidaymakers at all times of night. I hope you find your ideal place but things change so quickly.

ok thank you we are only planning regular visits not full time at the moment 

We looked at Santa Pola which we quite liked

Ideally a small country property near a village of expats
