we have a l g air conditioning unit which is about 3 years old and is not working properly.

By not working, what do you mean? Is the unit running, but not cooling, or is it completely dead?

U it won’t shut down fully, so we have had to disconnect it from the mains

Take the batteries out of the remote and start it just using the manual button on the indoor unit.

Now use the button to switch off. 

If it still doesn't turn off then it's possibly the main pcb on the indoor unit.

If it does turn off then it's probably linked to the smaller remote pcb.
