Spare the lawyer, he will let others do the job and inflate the bill. Fill out the form below and request an interview here:

Have a credit card ready to pay processing fee. The seller should have given you a "Permiso de Circulacion" and a "Certificado de Caracteristicas Tecnicas". Do not take the originals with you (they may get seized), only photostatic copies. Tell them you have been offered the vehicle for purchase. Give s few information as possible by no means that you already own the vehicle. Any more questions - let me know by PM.

As bad as the situation is I certainly would not recommend this approach, you would be asking for trouble if you try to deceive the DGT as you suggest. Much better to get a professional to deal with it, I would recommend Carrasco in Playa Flamenca who dealt with change of ownership for us.

Thanks Pete for your response.
The car came with what I hope is all the relevant paperwork. I did do plenty of research before buying it. It has its reg doc, ITV doc until next Jan, passport picture of last owner etc. I got spanish insurance on it and explained to them I was not the registered owner yet. They said "no problem, ln Spain its the car that's insured not the owner."
I was hoping to get this done without involving the legal profession, as im told that can be a costly minefield.

Ask the "professional" for an estimate for doing exactly what I describe.

It's potentially problematic, especially if you didn't get a compraventa purchase/sale contract between you and the original owner, if the dealer didn't have the car registered in his name.
You'll also have to hope that DGT will accept a UK VAT invoice as proof that you don't need to pay transfer tax.
It's not an aspect I covered in my series of guides about buying a car, but reading them might help you to understand the procedures involved.

We done the same and brought a left hand drive car off a reputable dealer in Uk....he gave us all the paperwork including the previous owners passport details etc and when back in spain we had already insured it and we got Matt from Quesada to do the traffico part for 50 euros total and we had to pay the transfer tax on top! Takes a time to sort out but all quiet easy to deal with and still a very good saving from buying a local car out in spain. Car was only two years old when we brought it so I guess it would all depend on model ,age , mileage and above all who your buying off as to make the figures all stack up?
Good luck.

Hi
Many thanks for your reassuring response to my posting. Can I just ask who is Matt in Quesada? Is he a solicitor, if so can you help with contact details?
Thanks
Roy

Hello Roy,
Yes Matt is from Oneway services and he has an office just off the Main Street in Quesada. Your be able to find him on the inter web etc. I believe he has a secretary now as he was always busy . He can sort most things for you or if he can’t he will know what direction to send you in. He’s very reasonable on his prices and helpful albeit I think he’s adopted the Spainish way in some things he now does where he has been here so long😂
Always happy to help if I can and I know generally you get good info and help from most people on here who have learnt from their own experiences!
All the best.
