Hi everyone,

Can anyone enlighten me as to current account bank charges in Spain, we have purchased a property in Calpe, and our Lawyer has informed us that the we have to transfer the remaining balance of the purchase price into our Spanish bank (Bankinter), as we were hoping to transfer from a currencies direct company to avoid any bank charges, either to the Lawyer, Notary or the sellers bank.

Starting from day one all our monies were transferred using a currency exchange company to our Solicitor/Notaries account to avoid bank charges, we trusted our solicitor/notary as they were recommended and independent. The final payment was then paid by the solicitor/notary on the completion of the sale when we received the keys and signed the paperwork. Yes I am on the understanding that banks charge a fee for very large amounts transferred. Good luck with your purchase.

thanks, I will have to query that again with our Lawyer (Sun Lawyers), who we have given POA. The agents are independent who we paid the deposit, should be trusted and we will transfer the balance through a currency exchange company, I hope this can be done and will insist?

Can I ask another question, have I any other choices regarding UK pensions into a Spanish bank, with standing orders direct debits as charges are very high?

I used Wise for our property deposit, do you use Wise for all your Spanish direct debits and standing orders?

Hello, we have just completed on an apartment purchase and were required to transfer the bulk of the purchase price into our Spanish bank account  (We used Wise). A cheque then had to be issued in the sellers name by our bank and there was a fee for this. The reason for this process was to prevent money laundering as we had to prove where the money came from. The cheque was given to the sellers in front of the Notary when the deal was done. I think the old process of transferring the money direct to the solicitor is now frowned upon for this reason.  Also there can be no under the table deal regarding price offered and price paid. The only winner in this process was my Bank- Sabadell, who charged around 200 euros for the cheque. It originally wanted 480, but we negotiated this down by taking out their house insurance.

Simon.

...

I am on the understanding that non residents pay bank fees, as I am resident and have my UK private pension paid directly into my Spanish bank account I get free banking.
