My friend’s grandmother has  arrived here from Ukraine 4 months agoand speaks no Spanish but only Russian. She is feeling a bit isolated and lonely. Can anyone have any ideas how I can help her???

It's understandable that she's feeling that way. I would suggest searching on Facebook for Moraira Connect or similar local Facebook groups and put the enquiry on there. I think quite a few Ukrainians are now in the general area

The Atlea/Calpe area definitely has Russian speakers although I'm not sure if she would be happy making contact with Russians as opposed to Russian speaking Ukrainians!

If that fails, perhaps ask at the Town Hall if they're aware of any contacts or contact groups for displaced Ukrainians.

Hopefully you can get this sorted for her, being forced to flee your country is a terrible thing, especially for older people.

Kind regards, Steve

Hi IanAlan, the best way to make friends is by learning Spanish at language schools. Apart from learning Spanish, you can meet people from many different countries in similar situations. In Alicante, I regularly hear Russian spoken, and they all seem to be here in favour of peace. Some schools segregate people by country, but I meet even numbers of Russians and Ukranians, as well as others from Baltic States, Belarus etc. Most just want to live  a normal life. There are also Russian speakers forums, that started as education or hobby websites. May peace prevail for all. I have had friends stay with me from Kharkiv and an electrician from Mariupol has helped me. You can also study online on Busuu.com or Duolingo.com and meet people virtually. There are also supermarkets where Russian is spoken. Good luck to Grandma!

I will pass the information on . I think she really just needs a bit of company in a language she understands ! Poor soul to be displaced and isolated at her time of life.

Fingers crossed for her 🤞🤞🤞

There are orthodox churches in Alicante too, including Ukranian in the name.

Recently President Sanchez said that over 168,000 Ukrainian refugees had entered Spain in 2022. The 3 initial reception centres were in Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante. Local ayuntamientos must know which local organisatiins help refugees. Skype, Whatsapp and internet in general are key to communication.
