Any tips on what is the best method and fixings to use?

Hi

We have used 3M command double sided picture hangers

You fix to the wall and the item and they are available in different size and for different weights of its.

No need for drilling into walls and they are removeable so you can change, position of items or hang different things.

Available online on Amazon and probably multiple retailers

Hope this helps

I agree that 3M Command strips are an excellent product, but they need a firm and smooth surface for application. Many, particularly older, Spanish properties have walls finished with gotale/gotelé, which is a soft plaster similar to artex, and it's sprayed on and produces a stippled effect. Unless such a wall has only a light stipple and has been sealed with paint, I'd be dubious about using the Command strips.

I have gotale walls and struggle to fix things on the wall.  It crumbles and flakes off very easily.  Any suggestions for fixings on these walls please?

All you can do is drill and plug, and if it's terracotta blocks with voids, then use the methods suggested by Pete.
