When shopping in the Market,  I often see small shells in netted bags and I wonder what they are.   If anyone can advise of their name and how to cook them that would be great.

Many thanks.

They could be clams or cockles, difficult to know without a picture. Look on the BBC good food website you will find lots of recipes. 🙂

Thank you for your reply.  Unfortunately I don't have a photo.  But they are dry, a whitish colour and always seem to be sold on the fruit and veg stalls.  I think your right, they may be cockles.

Hi

berberechos - cockles. (with ribbed shells).

[more common] almejas - small clams (with smooth shells)

Thank you Villas.  That's them.  Also learnt a new word today.  Now just need to know how to cook them.

I love them. I had them last night. Mmmmm. Vapor ( steamed) until they ALL open. Add your caldo (sauce) to your taste. My favorite, vieiras ( scallops) all an aphrodisiac! 😋😇💬  ( in my opinion) Enjoy. V

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

On second thoughts I'm not sure they are berberechos.  They look like the wrinkles we used to have back home years ago that we ate with a pin, but the shells are off white. Any thoughts?

Many thanks

berberechos certainly are & look like cockles.

If they look like "wrinkles" they are creases on one´s skin!

if they (look likewinkles they may be small caracoles ( in season at the mo.) snails.

Have a close look next time you see them. If they've got thick shells then they are probably a seafood product.

If they've got thin shells then, as Villas suggests, they are probably land snails.

Bung them in a pan, add a splash of white wine and some chopped garlic, and steam them. Give the pan a bit of a shake around whilst steaming them.

On Callosa mountain near to me, when there's heavy rain, the locals go up the mountain to pick the nice big fleshy snails that come out of hiding. They're not to everyone's taste, but I like them.
