€2k will buy you a 15 year old banger with 150,000km on the clock.

€5-7k will get you something that’s 8-10 years old and 70,000km on the clock.

When cars are less than 10 years old they need an ITV (MOT) every 2 years, after 10 years old this changes to every year.

If you can afford a new one then you should go for it, as it will hold its value well and you won’t need an ITV for the first 3 years.

Pete.

Contact Graham at http://spanish-number-plates.com/ and ask for a quote.

You might be able to avoid import tax if you start the re-registration process within 1 month of first signing-on the Padron, provided you’ve owned the vehicle for 6 months at that point.

Bear in mind that the car will be worth less than the money you spend on re-registering it, as nobody wants a RHD Crain Spain, and you won’t be able to take it back to the U.K. as it will need re-importing and re-registering. So, you’ll need to run it into the ground then scrap it. Getting some RHD related parts in Spain can be expensive, so anything to do with steering and front suspension could be a costly repair in future and take a while to get the parts.

Also, driving a RHD car is more difficult with things like toll booths and overtaking, so personally I’d sell in the UK and buy a LHD car instead.

Pete.

It's true that second hand cars are relatively expensive here but I cannot agree with blanket characterisations of being 15 year old or having 150k km on the clock automatically labelling cars as bangers.

Given the benign climate here corrosion is something which barely enters the equation and for most cars manufactured in the past three or four decades 150k (93k miles) is nothing to be afraid of either, particularly true for diesels, so it just may be that prices for second hand cars are what they are because they are worth it!

In my book buying new cars is a game strictly for mugs but hey somebody has to do it in order to maintain a steady flow of used cars for the more enlightened amongst us to pick up at more reasonable prices so please do carry on 😊

I didn't actually say that all cars that are 15 years old or with 150,000 km on the clock are bangers.

I said that if you want to spend €2k then you'll get a banger, and that it will likely be 15 years old and have 150,000km on the clock.

I agree that buying a brand new car wouldn't be my choice, but as the OP had floated that as a possibility then t may be his preferred alternative to spending €5-7k on something that is knocking-on for 10 years old.

So.....sounds good, thinking about that style. not knowing much about that car (which I like), it´s basically nearly twenty-year old Mondeo Jag. Am I about right?

not at all

the x type was based on a Mondeo with ford running gear

2.5 and 3.0 petrol released ist

great cars but the 2.5 had huge oil circulation problems so crap

2.0 ltr petrol next and then the diesels for the masses

a great company car

3.0 the md

2.5 the manager

2.0 the rep

and the god diesels for the loozers

oh and the 3.0 petrol was not based on a ford it had unique jaguar running gear brakes and floor pan

and a multitude of extras

had one new in 2003 cost 35k an awesome under rated classic to be

and the Mondeo never had a 3.0 engine best was a 2.8 from the Granada it never took off
