Good morning everyone, hope you can help.

We've had an apartment rented out for the last 10 years but, may take it back next year.

It smells really really bad. Very musty.  We are thinking of getting rid of all the furniture, cleaning, painting etc.

Any ideas if that will get rid of that bad smell if everything is new?

Also best place to get new furniture within about half hour of catral please, that offers delivery.

Thank you

First of all I would be leaving windows open for as long as possible to air the place.  has it been closed up for a long time ?

Check if they had pets, might of had a few accidents on carpet etc. Check sinks, shower, toilet drains, washing machine etc,  it’s always worth using the cleaning agent ever so often on washing machine and dish washers.  Bedding, mattress etc.

I would then completely wash the whole place, even get in a local company, they are advertised on Talk Quesada, good reports, Sunshine cleaning services and the other is Merry Maids.   Get professional in to clean cooker +34 654 907 247 (Benijofar).
Bowls of bicarbonate soda in fridge etc and down drains absorbed odors.

Furniture if it’s for yourselves I would try the shop in Benijofar, it’s situated at the junction Meubles Ballester find them via Google, they have some nice and very reasonably priced at the moment, price fixed until 31/12 on most items.  Lots in Almoradi as well.

I’m sure once you check everywhere and get the marigolds on the place will soon smell fresher.

Hope you get sorted out.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer.  Really appreciate that.  We will do all of those things once we get the keys back.

Will also look at almoradi etc for new furniture.

Kind regards

Jo

Get on the AP7 at 733, to Almoradi. Take the 737 exit into Almoradi and you are spoilt for choice for furniture stores along the mile long road to the town centre.

As well as those already recommended you could try JYSK, there is one in Elche, they are on-line as well.

We had a similar problem in our place with a regular damp/musty smell. We have had air vents put in all the rooms and that has solved the problem.

Rgds,

Aitch.

Do you know if furniture prices are similar to the UK.  Someone told me the furniture is much dearer in Spain.

Also do you know if they offer  delivery service.

Kind regards

Hi Aitch

That's interesting.  Can you tell me a bit more about the air vents you've had put in please, and how to go about it.  Many thanks.

Kind regards

Jo

Yes, furniture is more expensive in Spain than the UK so when people move house, they will often take it with them.

You could search for: "thrift store Almoradi area".

Furniture is OK to buy but anything electrical could be dodgy.

I recently had a year in Benidorm and they had a number of "cheap" furniture stores in the El Cisne area but that is an hour's drive away.

Hi,

the air vents we had installed were done by a builder, basically they drill a 12cm diameter  hole through the wall to the outside and fit 15x15cm metal grills over the hole at each side. The grills have a mesh backing to stop insects entering. The vents improve the air flow within the room and around the house. We had at least one vent installed in every room. They are high up on the wall, just below ceiling height.

I have installed closable covers over the metal grills on the inside as there can be quite a draft in the winter. You just have to balance the airflow with the amount of moisture generated, especially in the winter, to avoid any condensation building up indoors.

The builder charged 50euro per vent with grills installed. I bought and fitted the covers myself (got them from Leroy Merlin).

When we leave the house we leave the closable covers open. We leave all internal doors open, including wardrobe doors, to prevent and mould or musty smells building up, This was recommended to us by neighbours and it has certainly cured the problems we had.

Rgds,

Aitch.

That is really helpful and I appreciate your quick response.

I think that's what we will do.

Kind regards
