Can anyone explain why we have to pay almost 50% on parcels received from England. We were under the impression that import tax was only due on goods over 50 euro. At Christmas we were charged 12 euro for 6 mince pies and 5 slices of fruit cake (my niece thinks we live in the third world!!!). Today we had to pay 14 euros for present and card worth £25. Is this anything to do with import tax or is this another scheme to get money out of us?

Hi,
As far as I know its down to import taxes which seems to be charged differently every time.
Everyone I know and many members of this forum have stopped ordering anything from the UK and have also asked family members not to send gifts for any reason. It's easy nowadays to do a free bank transfer through various apps for birthday presents etc and electronic cards from Moonpig.
I do any Internet shopping through Amazon.es and then don't have to pay any import taxes and often post free.

Hi Heatray,
This information from Correos's website explains:
"Imported goods may be subject to different taxes and customs duties depending on their content, value and other legally considered factors. These amounts must be paid by the shipment's recipient in order to collect the packages pending customs clearance."
https://www.correos.es/es/en/customer-service/customs-information
Kind regards,
Kim

The main slice of the customs bill is beyond any doubt the handling charge. Lack of showing "no commercial value" and failure of affixing green customs declaration sticker may also play an important part.

Agree with all above.
It's the result of leaving the EU.
As far as I'm concerned UK no longer exists as a source for anything.

I queried this with the British Embassy and was told to contact Spanish Customs which I haven't done. If anyone can be bothered with that let me know how you get on.Good old embassy, always working hard on our behalf
Not sure its up to the British embassy to comment on Spanish taxes.

It's up to the British Embassy to address an issue that is affecting the 400,000 Brits in Spain surely? They've gone into bat for the people who ignored 2 years of warnings to change their driving licences.

I do not believe the British consulate would want to comment on the punitive taxes that Spain levies, the driving licenses are quite different.

What does that even mean?
