Hi, We are in the process of Moving to Spain, we have rented a Villa for a year and are in the process of applying for Residencia. We are undecided as to which way we will get our Healthcare for the purpose of Residencia. We have been told that we must get an S1 form, but this will mean that we will lose our NHS Benefits in the UK, and we wish to spend a few Months of our first year in Spain in the UK. This is due to Family Reasons and the fact that my Wife is in the process of having two new Knees, and she really wants to have the Operations in the UK. Would it be possible for us to apply for our Residencia using Private Health Insurance in the first case and then after the first year apply for the S1 for our Health Care after that ?  My Wife is a UK  Pensioner but I am not until October 2020, but  I understand that I can be included on her S1 as a Dependant ?   Regards.....  Chris

The NHS is a residency based healthcare, if you do not reside in the UK you should NOT be using it.

The choice is yours, live in Spain and use the S1 for your healthcare here or, spend less than 90 days here and remain a UK resident with the right to use the NHS.

Don't forget that you will automatically become a tax resident here when you have spent over 183 days in a year (not consecutive) here.

Cake and eat it scenario.

Be mindful if your wife is getting two total.knee replacements it is highly likely your Spanish Healthcare Insurance will not cover any complications/rehabilitation  costs associated with the aftercare. As it is an existing condition
