We have had a pigeon in our garden for 2 days now, he/she has rings on both feet so we assume it is a racing pigeon.  It seems very health, it pecks away at berries off the ficus and flies into the pool for a drink(despite us putting water down in a tray) but it refuses to leave.  It has taken a few tentative swipes at my rose bush and I am afraid that once it discovers the veg patch we wont be rid of it!  Can anybody tell me to whom I should report it to, back in Scotland the local police would deal with it?

Racing pigeons are firm favourites in Spain, one time I had the club members tramping across my garden tracking them! There is probably a local group which you could find out about at the ayuntimento as I doubt the Police would be bothered. If the bird is from afar, the ring number will establish the location of the owner as well.I bred parrots & various species,it seems like your bird has probably blown off course & is tired. They are very valuable to their owners so it's worthwhile trying to reunite him. However seems like he is last to get home!

Thank you for your quick response! However when I chased it off my veg patch (it was inevitable) it flew onto my neighbour's roof and then into another garden.  But if it comes back I'll bear your advice in mind.

A long time ago I was told by a avid pigeon fancier that birds which fail like, i.e. get lost and can't find their own way home, are worthless and the owners don't want them back!

Hi, there is a coffee shop in Benijofar called Veros.   The husband is well into pigeon racing, talk with them.   Also, if they are expensive pigeons they usually have the owner's telephone number on their wings.   You will need to catch the pigeon and open up one of the wings, then you can telephone the owner and he will come and get it.   Do not let it go again put it somewhere safe like the shed or somewhere similar so that he will still be there when they come.   By the way, they usually come quickly.

They are not racing pigeons they are bred to chase after a hen bird and see which one copulate with her the quickest a lot of them carry a small transmitter and are tracked so the owners can follow them

Thanks for that info, it is nice to learn something new.   The only reason I know about the telephone number is because one pigeon was injured in our garden when we lived in Benijofar and the shop told me about the telephone number and came and looked and telephoned the owner who quickly picked it up.   I think I may have assumed they were racing pigeons!
