Hi, I have just arrived back in the UK after driving to Spain and got a Speeding Ticket for 300 Euros, 50% reduction if paid within 20 days. Has anyone had this problem and what happens if I don't pay, any comments appreciated.

We be watching my speed in future, stupid amount of money, don't even know where the cameras are, unlike the UK, happy driving!

Not sure which way you go. But I come via the Western France route. Bordeaux cross the border at San Sebastian and go via Pamplona, Zaragoza, Valencia. The cameras are well signposted and I do try to slow down for them.  Didn't know they went after UK drivers tho. This is good to know

If you don't pay, they can take you to court. This was enabled by an EU directive that came into effect a couple of years ago. Also, if you've got a bank account here, then that could be embargoed.

If you were in a 120 km/K limit area, you'd have had to be doing between 151 and 170 to get a €300 fine.

On a Spanish license, there'd also be two penalty points, but I don't think they've yet come up with an agreement to apply that to other licenses.

In future, either moderate your speed, or use e.g. ViaMichelin to find out where the speed cameras are.

Not all speed cameras are obvious or announced on DGT's website. For example, there are two on the CV-91 between Almoradi and Guardamar. You can only tell these are cameras once you've passed them and look back in your mirror.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Hi I have been doing this trip for 15 years, and without doubt the shortest and cheapest route is via Alcoy, Zarragoza, Huesca, Jaca, Somperet Tunnel, into France via Oloron, Dax, Bordeaux, Angouleme, pick up toll south of Poitiers come off toll north of Tours then go via Chatteaudun etc, total cost in tolls is 25 euros to Calais and saves approx. 100 miles in distance, time approx 20 hours from Alicante, if you need me to give you exact road numbers etc for full journey please ask, believe me this is far and away the best route, i have met up with many drivers over the years and they agree with me this is the best route

Thanks Carpetman, that's interesting.

I do a very similar route to you, but via Font de la Figuera, Valencia, Teruel, then the same as you to the Poitiers area, but I've never taken the motorway from there, except around Tours. After Tours, do you go via Chartres, Dreux, Evreux, Rouen & Abbeville motorway to Calais?

Anyway, I would certainly appreciate more details of your chosen route, please.

Thanks again,

Geoff.

Hi Geoff, yes i go via Teruel, once at Zaragoza go Huesca, Jaca then take the n330a go through the Somport tunnel, this tunnel ia approx 7 miles long takes you onto the n134 in France then at Oloron take the D55 towards Orthez then D430 Puyoo  D130  Then D3 following signs for Dax then from Dax pick up motorway to Bordeaux although these are country roads i never get held up and it saves about 100 miles instead of going via San Sebastion plus all the toll charges and yes i go the way via Chartres as you described if i do journey with 2 stop overs i normally stay at Dax 1st night and Chatteaudun 2nd night or if i do it with 1 stop over i normally stop near Angouleme  In fact for last few times i have sailed from Dieppe to Newhaven via DFDS ferries

Regards John

Those cameras have never worked there is nothing in the boxes

Not just speeding fines /tickets but also depending on weather UK or Spainish vehicles the Spainish and more then likey the French now have all the same data and information available to them as the UK police so if you have no mot ,tax or insurance from which ever country the vehicle is from then you risk a big fine and losing your vehicle. No insurance in Valencia is an automatic 1400 euro fine alone.... I know because it happened to a friend of mine! So all the ex pats running about in clean looking cars etc beware...you will get stopped and will be fined it’s only a matter of time!
