Yes they rushed it.and it will never be the same for non residents with holiday homes like me in spain ever again......

Agreed Stirling. However it wasn't rushed. It was steam rollered and there was plenty of time to negotiate an amicable deal. This was never on the cards though.

You could never legally spend indefinite periods of time in Spain even under free movement rules.  If you stayed in Spain longer than 182 days a year then you became a tax resident, so better to be a full resident as well.  If you want to live in a property more than 6 months of the yea...

...r then it would be your primary home, not your second home.  And if you do have two homes, then as you can only be physically present in one at a time, the other will be empty - you will be paying out on the empty property whether that empty property is in Spain or in the UK.

As for the 90/180 rule - that is a Schengen rule and Spain is very happy being part of Schengen.  Schengen rules don't apply to EU citizens but UK government removed Brits from the EU, so they now apply.  Not Spain's job to sort out a problem that the British government caused for its own citizens.

The U.K. even when in the EU was never part of the Schengen group.

I haven’t heard anyone say Spain is anti British, although it appears that some of the residents are. I don’t have a problem with the 180 day rule, I just would like to be able to choose when I visit. Personaly I don’t need 180 days, as I prefer to be in the UK with my family. 4-5 months is plenty for me. I enjoy the best of both worlds.

I do agree if the system could be simplified, it should, but it existed before Britexit...happy to be corrected. It may have something to to do with, ensuring you do not qualify to become an income tax resident? I am sure it pre-existed for a reason and not only to punish Brit holiday home owners and all other 3rd national holiday home owners?

Ideally to best suit the needs of holiday home owners, maybe a softer Britexit deal may of better suited our needs? When that went through Parliament, the support of MPs...not the people, was not there to pass that through. That is Democracy for you:(
