A heard a couple of ladies bemoaning the fact that they couldn't get English spices in Spain and they didn't trust the Spanish ones. Actually, with one exception, they are all the same - just Spanish names.

So, here is a list of Spanish herbs and their English equivalents. Pebrella is a Spanish spice from the Alicante region which doesn't have an English equivalent, but it's a bit like Thyme. Guindilla isn't used as a name much for Chilli powder, it's usually found on the shelves as Pimentón, which also means Paprika.

I'm sure I've left some out, but others can add them as and when.

El Ajo --------  Garlic
La Albahaca --------  Basil
El Anís --------  Aniseed
El Azafrán --------  Saffron
La Cayena --------  Cayenne Pepper
Los Cebollinos --------  Chives
El Chile --------  Chilli
La Citronela --------  Lemon grass
El Cilantro --------  Corriander
El Eneldo --------  Dill
El Estragón --------  Tarragon
La Guindilla --------  Chilli
La Hierbabuena --------  Mint / Peppermint
Las Hierbas Provenzales --------  Herbs de Provence
El Hinojo --------  Fennel
Las Semillas de Hinojo --------  Fennel seeds
El Laurel --------  Bay leaf
La Mejorana --------  Marjoram
La Menta --------  Mint
La Nuez Moscada --------  Nutmeg
El Orégano --------  Oregano
La Pebrella --------
El Perejil --------  Parsley
El Romero --------  Rosemary
La Salvia --------  Sage
El Tomillo --------  Thyme

La Canela --------  Cinnamon
Los Clavos --------  Cloves
El Comino --------  Cumin
La Cúrcuma --------  Turmeric
El Cardomono --------  Cardomon
El Heno Griego --------  Fenugreek
El Jengibre --------  Ginger
La Macis --------  Mace
La Páprika --------  Paprika
El Pimentón Dulce/Picante --------  Chilli mild/hot, Paprika
La Pimienta (molida) --------  Pepper (ground)
La Vainilla --------  Vanilla

RayD. very well done & very useful!

Guindilla A good all round easy to grow (medium) "hot" chilli for currys. (google scoville scale).

Our local Spanish pride themselves on growing very hot chillis ( but rarely eat them!)

The only other one you (or I) missed "Cilantro. (corriander) Again easy to grow & good with Spaghettis!

I've updated the list with Villa's and JIm's additions

Is there any way to get tabs on the forum as they seem to be replaced with spaces?

I've never asked Alex, but it would be nice if we could have both tabs and tables.

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, the one thing one can never see to find - I assume because, unlike France, it is not used here, is bouquet garni. Yes, I know I can make my own, and when I was much younger we all used to do things like that -however, the prebundled little faggotsof bouquet one can buy in France are very useful - as are the teabag packet equivalents!!!1

I agree, Stephanie, I can't find it either.

And thinking of things I find hard to get, there's another one for the list - one of my favourites:

La malagueta, or La pimienta de Jamaica - Allspice
