Hello everyone,

Now then, this may be a bit more complicated than I thought but…

Do any of you know how I would go about getting my repeat prescriptions, that I currently have in the UK, in Spain?

The reason I think it might be more complicated is because I believe the majority of you reading this will be able to use the Spanish healthcare system due to your visa/residency.

My wife and I are just waiting for the release of the new Digital Nomad visa. This will require us both to have full health insurance and I don’t believe we will have access to the Spanish system.

I’m aware we will have to pay for our prescriptions, that’s not a problem. But if anyone can offer some advice as to how we would go about getting repeat prescriptions in Spain, that would be great.

Thank you in advance.

I’m also aware you may have more questions. Just ask away.

Thanks,

Jamie & Laura

For anything other than normal over the counter medicines, you will need to bring a doctor's prescription to the pharmacy.

So you will need to visit a GP, presumably via your private health insurance. Your insurance provider should be able to advise how you go about this.

It's very unlikely that a Spanish doctor will blindly issue a copy of a UK script but will want to assess you for themselves and prescribe accordingly, the same as would happen if you changed doctors in UK.

Also you'll discover that in many instances medicines commonly prescribed in UK are not available in Spain meaning that a script couldn't be cloned anyway.

If possible I'd try to secure a 3 month supply of your UK medications to tide you over when you arrive.

As an aside, it being pretty fresh out of the box, I'm sure many would be quite interested in hearing of your experiences in acquiring your DN visas.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with you here, Darro. When we arrived several years ago, jumped through all the required hoops and finally went to visit our newly acquired GP, we took all our UK medical records, which we were perfectly willing to have translated professionally. The GP could not have been less interested, and flatly refused them, only being interested in my husband’s list of medications, for which she issued prescription equivalents with no further enquiry. I do speak Spanish to a reasonably high level, so it was not a case of misunderstanding. She has, fortunately, since retired and has been replaced by a much more pro active and younger incumbent.

very interested in this topic,

My wife has previously had a stroke and now as a result she has developed fibromyalgia, as you can imagine she now has to take a lot of medication, I was wondering how people manage now after brexit.

I am thinking of applying for an Irish (eu) passport as my parents were from Ireland, would this passport allow my wife and I to have free health care if we moved to spain and became residents?
