Hello

I would appreciate advice please!  My husband and I are planning to spend 5 months in Altea from the beginning of November to escape the British winter.  I understand there is a lot of uncertainty regarding Brexit, but could anyone advise me on whether I need to apply for Spanish Residency for our trip?  We don't need to find work but I have read that we need Residencia for trips of over 90 days, I have also read that many people do not apply for it, but what are the consequences of not doing so?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Only 90 days allowed now. Has always been the case but spain turns a blind eye. Wont be that way once we leave and passports go through scanner and no residencia shown

If Brexit doesn't happen before the end of your stay then the length of your stay won't be monitored and you'd get away with exceeding 90 days.

If it happens 31st October, then you'd potentially need a long-term visa before you could move here. Without that then they might not let you in.

Many thanks for your replies - just one more question.  Do you think it will make a difference that actually we will have to make a few journeys back to the UK during the 5 months, staying in the UK for anything from a couple of days to a week and then returning?  We could make each stay less than 90 days.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

There is no such thing as a long term visa. You are either resident or not. We will be a third country national. If u want to take the risk go for it but the powers that be here are telling everyone to get spanish driving licence NIE Padron and Residencia and sort SIP card for pensioners for health care before brexit. We've been here 12 yrs and done much research and gone through all the procedures

The long-term visa ((visado nacionale, or visado de larga duración) is what is required for non-EU citizens wanting to move to Spain for more than 90 days. Without an agreement to the contrary, this would be required if you moved here post-Brexit.

If you moved whilst the UK are still in the EU, including if there's an agreed transition period, your length of stay wouldn't be monitored.

If length of stay is monitored, then you would be limited to a total of 90 days in any 180, irrespective of how many segments that was comprised of.

Its always been 90 days but not monitored but the passport control has really tightened up at alicante for the last months.
