Hi everyone. I’m hoping someone can give me some first hand experience. I have friends who are driving down in their car, via Ferry to Santander, at the beginning of June.

They are bringing a lot of stuff from their Uk home as they now live here permanently. Does anyone know whether they have to complete customs paperwork, and if so, where they can find it. Also, whether they’ll have to pay any sort of duty to bring it in, as it’s their own, used, personal belongings. It’s not a van, so just what will go in a standard car.

Any advice would be very welcome, as they are getting worried about this part of the journey. Many thanks.

In any case they should prepare a complete and detailed list of all belongings stating average actual individual value. Tax exemption apply on USED items if wihtin 6 months of setting up residence

Hello

We rolled up in Bilbao ferry port from Portsmouth in 2007 (obviously prior to Brexit) with our Picasso full to the gunnels. It was our intention to stay but at this point, to all intents and purposes, we were simply visitors.  The only items on board were our clothes and we had not given any thought whatsoever about any customs problems and there weren't any.  Indeed we have since done several crossings from both Bilbao and Santander and Spanish customs have been the least of our worries. Sadly all may have changed.

Rather than relying on second hand information from unreliable and unsubstantiated sources why not check with international removals companies who should be up to speed with the current regulations.  Under normal circumstances they would be coming down with would be new residents who are bringing the kitchen sink with them.

Hi,

we are moving over to the Costa Blanca in late March and have been told to expect a charge of around 600 euros for our 'sticks' by our professional removal company.

Cheers.

Hi Janette

prior to Brexit we did 3 journeys in our own van with household belongings with total ease as non residents still in EU. Last year, having read the implications of post Brexit customs charges we travelled by car with rear full of items, nothing new and yes I made lists in English and Spanish with low 2nd hand values. The official asked if we had a pet, No, looked over our rear through the windows and beckoned us to go through. Didn't view list or open boot. We didn't get away until August for 3months and usually by now we would be returning next month for next 3months. I am still anxious re taking the van, we still have loads to go over but unsure whether to go by van or car again. We also lost our fences and 2 shed rooves in Storm Arwen, the day after we returned home in November and the fences(£1600) didn't get done until last week and we still haven't had our roofing done as roofers are booked right through till May. Anyway it's put us off booking as our garden needs a lot of work. Again think we will just go once this year but think maybe we will chance it by van. If you have anything new, make it look used, no pristine items in boxes, and you should be OK. I did read a post where a person pointed out his goods were all old bought pre Brexit so therefore shouldn't have iva applied but he didn't post if he got through without customs charges. I personally feel if we were using a courier, because of all the paperwork they have to fill in there more instances of duties being paid, but DIY transfer of goods seem to go through with a lot less instances of paying same. Anyway Good luck in your journey. For people moving over due to residency change they should be exempt charges on used personal belongings within 12 not 6 months of moving. Oh btw you have a €430 allowance duty free so if your list is less then no charges applicable.

Regards

Pauline
