Are their any benefits of having dual nationality with both a British and a EU passport?

Hi Lolly,

If you´re currently living in the UK and want to move to an EU member state, or living in one EU member state and want to move to a different member state, it's much easier to do that with an EU passport, now that the UK is a Third Country nation.  As an EU passport holder, the financial requirements for residency are much lower and the process is much easier than the visa application now required of UK nationals since Brexit.

Kind regards,

Kim

Didn’t think it was allowed. I thought you you couldn’t hold a GB passport as well as let’s say a Spanish passport.

Or  is that another Brexit change.

It depends on the country involved. UK citizens can hold another nationality. I think Spain requires you to renounce your other citizenship before taking up Spanish citizenship.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes, that was my train of thought as well.

My niece British born but married to an Australian, holds dual nationality. She had to go through an exam of all things Australian. It was quite funny because she taught her in laws lots of things they didn’t know about their own country.

But just wondering now if as a Brit you could also hold a passport with any other European country. Not including Eire of course.

Hi Shaun,

Yep, that's correct, Spain states that you can't have dual citizenship and you have to surrender, for example, your UK passport to your country of origin, but I doubt it has the resources to check.  I wouldn't advise travelling on it though - after ETIAS is introduced next year, there'll be a digital audit trail which could flag up the anomaly of a Spanish citizen travelling on a non-Spanish passport 😉

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim, would you remind me what ETIAS is please.   Thank you.
