Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations about basic funeral plans here in Spain? Would you take a plan out with a company such as Avalon, or Golden Leaves, or just go with the recommendations given at the time of the unfortunate event?

I have put thought to that subject and recently decided to start a separate savings account just for that purpose which is also accessible to my other half.

We've started savings too. But decided to go for basic cremation, simple clean and no fuss, inexpensive too, approx 1500 euro per cremation.

Sounds good to me. Avalon wanted 11.000€ for insuring myself and husband. Preposterous.  As if it isn't enough that we are accosted every time we go in Carrefour by them. Think Spanish favour funerals going ahead quite quickly after passing, and daily costs at funeral directors are very costly, especially while waiting for family to come over. We have our Liverpool Victoria insurances that would cover a cost of 1.500€. Wouldn't want to put our families out by coming over. I feel a lot happier reading your post eiretour. Gracias.

Can't speak for Golden Leaves, haven't heard of them, but give Avalon a wide berth. Quoted 11.000€ for two people. Daylight robbery. Good luck.

Good grief, what were you getting for €11,000?  Our joint plan with Avalon cost €4,300 in 2016; it also includes cremation in the UK, should one or both of us happen to be there, rather than Spain, at our demise.

We bought our Avalon funeral plan because the service given when each of my in-laws passed away was exemplary.  When my mum--in-law died, Avalon's representative arrived before the ambulance.

If anyone wants a cost-effective alternative, confident that they would cope in the event of the death of their loved one, I'd suggest going direct to the funeral directors:

When my parents first moved to Spain some 20-odd years ago, they both took out funeral plans with Avalon covering unfortunate events occurring either in Spain or in the UK (or anywhere else come to think of it). I have no idea of the costs involved but I can't see mum or dad not getting good value for money - dad was a Scot and mum was from Yorkshire (no racial slurs implied). All I do know is that when mum passed away in 2006 and dad in 2018, on each occasion Avalon's services were exemplary.

Obviously in a distressed state, the last thing you want us unnecessary hassle and I can say that the whole process from beginning to end (both times) was as painless as it could possibly be. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Hi Kim.  Don't know what we were quoted for,as the reps in Carrefour are quite aggressive at times, and have  actually followed us as we have walked past them. We complained to Avalon. Our neighbours actually paid the 11.000 euros, then were sorry,as they said whoever passed first, the other wouldn't stay in Spain anyway. Must try,and find out what we were getting for that amount of money? Our uk insurances will cover a budget cremation anyway. Gracias.

I approached Avalon in Carrefour about 3 years ago, but then like you, found them a little too pushy, and didn't get a clear quote out of them, so I was put off by that.

This is exactly what I'm after, and would like to purchase a plan sooner rather than later. It is just a question of who to put your trust in.
