hi,this is the first time I have joined a forum, not sure if it will help or not. looking to buy a villa, never been to  this area before, but it looks to be what I am looking for on paper. im retired and over 70 so this is a bit daunting. should I buy or rent longterm over the winter. looking at some questions on  this site it does seem very complicated, and I am wondering if renting would be a safer option. the problem is getting to wherever I hire from the airport. not travelled much in the past so am a bit unsure.i would like to be within walking distance of proper shops and amenities, that's not a 10k hike away! need advice on the best area to be  looking from someone not trying to sell me a propery they want to get rid of.

For a start I'd rent something and, then. look around for a suitable alternative. In no case pay anything upfront to estate agents - that money is gone.

whats the best way to find somewhere to rent, do you know if some rental companies can pick you up from the airport? don't want to hire a car, too daunting to start with. where is a central place with reasonable rental.

Hi there, Torrevieja is quite a drive from Alicante. You could look at Gran Alacant as well, I don't know the area, I've heard that it has expanded quite a lot. Taxi fares would be much less. Maybe ask on the forum about living there during winter. Just a suggestion. Good luck, Neil

Thanks Neil, planning on coming over for a recci algorfa looks like a nice place.i wonder if there is some sort of club or meeting place where I could talk to people who have already made the move. Would need to rely on public transport for the stay so don't want to be isolated.i wonder if anyone knows if there is an airport bus service from alicante to all the coastal towns.

Hi Algorfa is lovely but if you don't want to drive you possibly might feel isolated.

I live in Playa flamenca you can walk to the boulevard ( shopping centre) you can walk to bars & restaurants.

It is further down the coast from Alicante airport but for us we don't mind that.

Some one else who lives in Algorfa might be able to advise you more.

Hope this helps Lorraine

Hi there, we just bought earlier this year in Torreveija and were delighted with the purchase.  We're located a few mins car drive from the town but it's nice and quiet but close to all amenities.  You could do like we did and get a taxi fromthe airport and arrange to meet with some estate agents. Might be no harm to have some indication as to what location you have in mind beforehand.

Morning Marcia,

Firstly, coming to live in Spain is a wonderful dream, but one that I recommend you research thouroghly before making any definite moves...that includes both renting or buying.

If you are internet savvy, you will be able to find a lot of the answers you're looking for on the web, I would advise you not to rely I heresay.

Here are a couple of quick pointers based on more than 25 years of living and workng experience on the Costa Blanca:

In most areas, public transport is not great,, the simple rule of thumb is that the further away from large towns you go, the less of it there is.

The Torevieja area, which includes the Orihuela Costa, will be able to offer you most of what you're looking for with a multi-cultural community, but you will have to accept that it can get very busy during the summer, the same would apply to Benidorm.

Towns like Algorfa all though they're very pleasant and still have a trace of Spain about them, are not what I would call well connected to public transport so you would need to drive.

If you need any information, just drop me a line...JP

Hi Marcia,

We have a holiday home in Algorfa, and like previous posts have said, its a nice little town, it does have a doctors, and I believe a medical centre is planned, but public transport is more or less non existent.  There is supposed to be a bus service, but we have never, ever, seen a bus in the village, ever!  There are no big supermarkets, I think without a car you would be a bit stuck.  However it does retain a bit of the Real Spain, and we have found it a very friendly place.  Its about half an hour from the airport, and twenty or so from the nearest beach.

There are apartments to rent, look for the Fontanas, but be careful about getting a licenced property.

If you do need other info about the village, just ask.

Good Luck!

Julie
