Hi Robert55
I have driven the route a number of times, see route below this is what we normally do driving down from Newcastle in the North East, we either stop Ashford and start early next day or at Poitiers which is roughly half way in a Camponile there nothing flash but clean and safe. If your starting from Calais then I would suggest Pau area or Bayonne depending which route you take.
Calais-Abbeville-Rouen-Le Mans-Poitiers-Bordeux-Pau-Somport Tunnel-Jaca-Huesca-Zaragoza-Tereul-Valencia down the A7 to N332 or stay on motorway and pay 2 tolls then into Villamartin, tolls are approx 110 euros through France you are toll free in Spain this way, fuel is approx 130 euros.
With a nights stay, tolls & fuel I would guess your looking in the region of 300 euros give or take, plus its an awesome drive through the Pyrenees and down through Spain, I have done it in one go before from Calais but its tough going a young mans option if I am honest.
Regards
Andrew

Thanks for your reply and great info. We are starting from Glasgow, so I guess we are better with two stops and will do the same route

I agree with Robert55 route but it can be done toll free slightly different route, done it 4 times a year only twice last year due to travel restrictions.

Coming from Glasgow you can give yourself 3 days of fairly easy driving, Galsgow-Ashford (Travelodge or Prem Inn) Tunnel-Pau or just North (Check Trivago) Pau-Villamartin.
There is a hotel as you come out of the Somport Tunnel think its called Villa Anayet always fancied staying there never timed the journey right possibly a return leg hotel.
The other route is via Bayonne slightly more in tolls but in winter a better route you have a bigger choice of hotels as your running the coast, I prefer running the west side of France in the winter you are motorway all the way with loads of choice of hotels just of route, Somport Tunnel in summer deffo the way the scenery is something else.
As rds1234 you can do toll free but the time it adds plus extra fuel to the journey there is little in it for the sake of 100 euros I prefer to stay on the motorway and chug along cruise control on and enjoy the run, beware of speed traps I got caught last time €45 fine in France my mate got caught down and back.
Enjoy whichever route you take, I think we are looking to drive down early September for a couple of months fingers crossed, we are in Pau-8 there was a few on about setting up a game of golf and a catch up once we can get out again if that is of interest to you.

Firstly all the dozens of trips we have done as been in our motorhome dog as well.
To get down to Spain we call fastesis 5 days, we do Rouen- Bordeaux using national but we jump on A10 north of Tours junction 19 come off junction 30 south of Poitiers €15.50 saves good time.
South of Bordeaux A63 one more toll€5.50 you can go around it. Next come off junction 12 to Dax then over the Pyrenees lots of new roads no more little mountain passes and then nice toll free run down to Torrevieja.

I have also used Booking.com and Ibis hotels and would recommend that as well.
The advantage with Booking.com is that you usually get free cancellation up to 24 hours before arrival.
