Hello everybody, I am planning to move to Denia and find out if it is the right place to retire, I wonder if someone can tell me

1. The cost of the services if I rent an appartment with 3 bedrooms (electricity,  water, etc)

2. What are the benefits to live in Denia compare to Javea for people who is retired?

3. Which city has more retire people?

4. Pros and cons to live in front of a beach or in the city?

Thanks in advance

I can't comment on the running costs for a 3 bedroom house because it would depend on so many things. Especially how much water and electricity you use, what electricity tariff you choose, how many people living there, etc etc, if there are community fees, how much they are etc etc

Javea has more retirees, more British by far, German, Dutch and Scandanavians. It's a more touristy town than Denia. There are more expat retired group activity organisations in Javea if that was your question.

Denia is a large Spanish town, with a much more Spanish feel, and absorbs its tourism more so than Javea. There are plenty Brits living there too.

I would have thought the pros and cons of living in front of a beach or living in a city are pretty obvious??

Thanks Steve for you answer,

I have read that in winter is cold and I should need to use a heater, obvious all depends of the property, if someone live alone in a appartment more less do you have an idea how much could be the services fees per months?

What about cultural events like concerts? Do I have to go to Valencia o Alicante?

Thanks for you kindness

Compared to which other coastal towns?

The northern Costa Blanca is more expensive than the southern part but that's a generalisation. And it's more expensive for good reasons but I won't insult you by listing them.

And.......I live ten minutes from Denia but I'm willing to bet the cost of living in my village is way way less than some southern Costa Blanca areas.

I have friends that live in Denia town  , they are now on there second property , they compare food costs , insurance and other living costs to ours and they acknowledge that everything is more pricey than our area .

Agreed that inland prices are cheaper , this holds true for most areas .

And whats with the snobbish attitude ..!!

Tita the service charges (Community fees) depend on the floor size of your property, and includes garage and trastero (storage rooms located in the garages) They will also depend on the quality and desirability of the urbanisation and the amount of facilities the urbanisation has to maintain.

So the fees for an apartment without a garage in an upmarket urbanisation with no pool and low on gardens could actually be cheaper than an apartment on a "less desirable" urbanisation that has a big pool, gardens and a tennis court etc

This is why it's almost impossible to tell you what to expect. The only way to be sure is to do a viewing trip, looking at the apartments you've seen on the internet and ask the agent. Agents may tell you the fees online before you travel to view.

Look for a property that gets daytime sun in the winter, use a compass on the terrace when you view. Winters "feel" cold at times because you become used to temperatures from 20-37 so 6-10 feels cold.

Properties aren't insulated here the same way they are in the UK, and internal tiles that feel warm to bare feet in the summer feel freezing cold to the feet in winter.

Most people, depending on their property, use wood burners, aircon driven heating, oil filled radiators, take your pick. I have several rugs that go into summer storage and come out around early December.

I hope that helps a little.

Comparing Denia to Torrevieja just ain't comparing eggs with eggs. Sorry you feel my attitude is snobbish, not intended in any way.

I forgot in my last answer to you to mention that there are cultural events all over the Costa Blanca, concerts, theatre, shows, live music. Obviously the bigger more famous performers you would travel to Valencia or Benidorm or Alicante but theres lots going on in most large towns like Javea, Denia etc. Most retirees join a group where they find out about "what's on" and what's coming up. Some of the free British newspapers also advertise upcoming events.
