A birthday present from uk for which the sender paid £9 postage, cost me 5€.  Yesterday a Christmas present from Australia was charged at 14€…neither me, nor the postman knows what this charge is for?  Also, it does seem a bit random as other items are received ok….just wonder

Morning,

I think that they just pick a number out of the hat as I was charged 34€ for a set of house keys..said it was because of the UK now being a third world country.. they certainly got that bit right..

The amounts refer to a customs clearance charge.

No rhyme or reason to what is being charged I have seen posts on here where some have been charged large amounts for parcel delivery others nothing.

Customs.

If your friends want to send something to you I suggest that they use Amazon Spain or Germany. You can change the language to english in both cases. And pay with Spanish or British credit or debit card.

Also works if you live in Spain and want to make a gift to someone who lives in the UK. Amazon.UK and pay with card of your choice.

Hello

You might want to read this, it's a lot to read but pick out the bits that are applicable...VAT & Import tax from non EU countries etc from July 2021, it does explain a lot...... I didnt read it all!

Sadly it's all the duty and customs charges we now have to pay. Seems to be random amounts to but I think there is a 5 euro admin charge and then 2.5% duty fee plus 21% VAT.  It seems to work out almost to that amount. A lot of people tell family and friends not to send anything from the UK anymore because of the costs.

Thank you all so much.  Understand now.

Unfortunately there is no rhyme nor reason as to what you get charged and I have been charged wildly different amounts by Correos and FedEx for parcels of similar value.  The differences between the paperwork is absolutely incredible.  Correos just about wanted my inside leg measurement and it added another week to the delivery time.

As has been recommended always try to get your stuff from within the EU.  If you go onto say, Ebay.de or Ebay.es read the small print that tells you where it's coming from, it could be the UK!!!!!!!
