My wife and I lived in the Valencia region from 2004 to 2006.  I was self-employed.  We are looking at moving back to Spain (somewhere around La Zenia) in the next couple of years - post Brexit.

Looking back through our old paperwork I have found that we both have NIE numbers, Social Security Numbers and I have a plastic SIP card.

I know that the NIE numbers are still valid as we nearly brought a house at the start of Lockdown (put backed out).  According to the internet the Social Security Numbers are valid for life too.  I'm not sure about the SIP card though.  It has a start date, but no end date, and I think it was only valid while we owned the house in Valencia.

Will any of these cards / numbers help us when we move out to Spain again?  Is there anything we can do before Brexit to renew / extend them?  Any other advice would be gratefully received. TIA.

If you intend getting residency after 1st January 2021 you need to also look at the income requirements.  I understand that you will need to prove that you have income of around min of €32000 per annum for a couple.

I have seen lots of different figures for this, so I'll wait until after Brexit has happened to get the official end figure.  There's no way we can move there before this anyway.

My question was more to do with the various numbers & cards that my wife and I have from when we last lived there.

Are you sure Social Security numbers stay with you?

We lived in Tenerife 2006/2008 and we were able to use NIE numbers to buy in Villamartin 2017.

Where can I find out if SS numbers can be used also?

Many thanks

Mary

That was just from a google search where I asked how long a Social Security Number is valid for.  I just want to know if these numbers / cards are still valid or not, and if so, what benefit it will give us from having them now.  I thought this forum might be the best place to get a proper answer.

Not at all.  I couldn't find the answer anywhere on Google, so thought I'd ask those with personal experience / knowledge.

The SS number is valid forever. However you can benfit only if you are paying into the system through self-employment, as an emplpoyee or by means of a so called "convenio especial". Enquire for details at any "Caja General de la Seguridad Social".

Obviously I haven't paid anything for over 14 years now, so it's probably not of much use.

I'll keep hold of it though, just in case.  It may save a bit of bureaucracy in the future.

Hi after the post yesterday I contacted the SS office and received an email earlier today . I was given clear instructions on how to apply for a copy of SS certificate. I have detailed our address in Spain and have hopefully it will be received.
