Something was brought to my attention today, so I thought I would share it.

Although we can all say how well the UK has done the vaccine rollout and that Spain has been slower. I find this interesting

Looking at the UK government stats, they add this wording ... percentage of the adult population.

All other countries don't use this statistic.

Off the UK government website - Vaccines are currently given in 2 doses, at least 21 days apart. By the end of 28 July 2021, 43,873 people had been given a first dose and 171,341 a second dose. In total, 46,733,115 people (88.4% of the adult population) have received a first dose and 37,782,252 people (71.4% of the adult population) a second dose of a vaccine.

The table below from our world in data shows the figure that other countries use - percentage of the population....So 71.4% becomes 56.4%. Both figures are correct, but depends which one you want to use. Obviously the UK government prefer the first, higher figure.

Doses given 84.3M

Fully vaccinated 37.6M

% of population fully vaccinated 56.4%

Then using the same table for Spain.

Doses given 55.2M

Fully vaccinated 26.4M

% of population fully vaccinated 56.3%

Although I accept the quantity is higher in the UK. Surely the figure that matters is the percentage of the population, 0.1% difference FULLY VACCINATED.

Just to be clear, I am not saying the UK haven't done well, just showing how figures can be manipulated.

Spot on SWC.  From a slower start, Spain overtook the UK last weekend in terms of the total number of double-vaccinations administered.  People confuse numbers with percentages - hardly surprising when governments mix them up to manipulate the data - and the public - to suit their own purposes.

Never were Mark Twain's words more pertinent, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics." 😄

Firstly well done to Spain on catching up with the leading countries, that is great news for Spain and for people wanting to visit Spain, of whch I am one.

The UK figures that started being published from last year have always been consistent, they targetted the adult population over the age of 18 with specific goals for all age groups. To date they have met every target date set. The numbers they set at the beginning are the same as they have now, so where is the manipulation of the data?

I think what you mean is not manipulation but different measurement parameters. The UK figures reflected the people they planned to inoculate. The figures being used by Spain are total population figures, which presumably the Spanish government think is more appropriate.

Regards,

Aitch.

Hi Kim,

when you say more people in Spain have had double vaccinations than people have had in the UK what are the figures you are comparing for each country?

I think the figure being spoken about are Canada top of the list with 57.98% double vaccinated, Spain 57.1% double vaccinated and UK 55.6% double vaccinated (July 28th 2021). I understand the manipulation of figures statement when the UK produced figures are 71.4% (as said above) but like for like comparisons are 56.4%. (Slight time differences on the figures 56.4% and 55.6%)

As I said both figures are correct, but the UK should use the same statistics as the rest of the world, not the one that looks best and try to use incorrect comparisons.

Sorry but that is absolute rubbish .The UK have been using the same stats from the off and they have not compared themselves to anyone.  Other websites use different stats and compare countries, not the UK government.  If the UK  had changed their system to make themselves look better than I could see a valid argument that is not the case.

The UK has ran fantastic vaccination program, starting with inoculating the most vulnerable and the very aged, then working down through the age groups. Each milestone they set they met and they reported on this consistently. They stuck to the plan without chopping and changing the vaccines and the age groups, and have delivered a very successful outcome. Don't try to paint a negative picture of what has been a great success story, they do not need to manipulate their stats to paint a positive picture, the results show the positivity for them.

Hi aitch,

I was being ironic, but I won my bet that you'd be the first to respond!  Sorry, I think my joke was probably a little too subtle 😉

Kind regards,

Kim

There is a direct proportion between Covid cases and Covid deaths in every country at any time, however as cases in UK are dropping, deaths are rising. This suggests number of new cases must be higher than reported/counted.

As for Spain the Covid cases increased as soon as they opened the country for tourists. Economic consideration came before health. Now they are forced to reintroduce 2 am curfew.

Which bits rubbish. The true stats or the UK uses a different benchmark

If you read what I wrote, instead of going on the offensive. I did say the vaccine roll out was good in the UK. About the only thing they have got right so far. My point is that the UK use different stats to the rest of the world. Totally irrelevant whether its from the start or not. When figures are compared they are not like for like...therefore the UK figures are overstated in comparison to the rest of the world. 88.4 percent 1st vaccination  according to the Uk figures, but only using their benchmark.

I think most, if not all nations took the same stance of vaccinating the elderly and most vulnerable first.

I cant believe you say the UK government have never compared their vaccination roll out to anyone else..Thats all they do. I frequently hear on UK news, the government saying how good their vaccination is compared to 'the rest of the world', being 'the world leader'. Maybe if they used the same benchmarks then the comparisons would be correct.

Hi Kim,

good answer, too subtle or mistaking numbers for percentages? a common problem but who know eh!
