I've just drove back through Spain to Santander which took about 8 hours or so. One thing I haven't come across before, was whilst i pulled over for a break in a picnic area. I was the only vehicle there so got out of the car and stood by the driver’s door (right hand drive).

About 3 minutes later a car pulled-in the area and parked right in front of me even though there was room for about 50 cars. There were 2 young lads in the car and the driver got out and started pointing at my tyres particularly my rear onside tyre and getting very animated. He wanted me to go round and look at the tyre in the meantime his friend got out of the car. I did get a little anxious and got the feeling the one was trying to distract me while the other was checking-out what I had in the car.

As it was I told the one looking at my tyre the car is fitted with sensors so if anything was wrong I would know, and if he didn’t leave I would call the police. He started shouting some Spanish obscenities, so I replied with my own in English and he got back in his car and sped off.

Seems distracting tactics are something to be aware when driving in Spain. Whenever you get out of the car lock your doors, this includes garages when you have to pay before you fill-up..

This is one of the oldest distraction cons and has been going on for years.

The more serious version of this one is that a car will pull alongside you pretending to be Guardia Traffico and indicate you should follow them.   Be aware the Guardia do NOT do this and their cars are marked.

Just point a camera at them and they will soon disappear.

Just another thought.  Never leave your car open and no one inside in a car park.  One guy will distract you, maybe asking for directions, while another takes anything he can from the car.

Please lock it, if only for a minute.  This is not happening every day, but please be aware.
